Title: desferal through a port at home?
Post by: nwalsh528 on May 06, 2010, 05:12:16 PM
Can desferal be done through some sort of port (vs. pump) at home? Just curious.  We are going the Exjade route, first but thinking about the future.

Desferal can be taken through a port. There are many pros and cons to ports. It is worthwhile to research the subject first, so that you can make an informed decision should desferal use come up in the future. We have a discussion about ports at

I have had that for two years. Be sure you get to learn how to work with that thing. My mother is the chef about my port and it is only because of her that mine is 6.5 years old. Nowadays I only use it for blood transfusions. But I get a port to do IV desferal at home. Mine is under my arm pit btw. In that case no one can see it. So if you do not know about it, you will never get to know about it (or I should tell it myself).
