Iron being chelated causes red urine with desferal and to some extent with L1 also. This varies from patient to patient and is related to iron load and dose of the drug.

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=2376085

Reddish discoloration of urine due to excretion of the iron-deferiprone complex has been reported in Deferiprone (DFP, Ferriprox™, Kelfer™, L1, CP20) treated patients.

http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=14871185

Quote
It increases urinary iron excretion, which mainly depends on the iron load of patients and the dose of the drug. It decreases serum ferritin levels and reduces the liver and heart iron content in the majority of chronically transfused iron loaded patients at doses >80 mg/kg/day. It is metabolised to a glucuronide conjugate and cleared through the urine in the metabolised and a non-metabolised form, usually of a 3 deferiprone: I iron complex, which gives the characteristic red colour urine.

Do not worry, it does come red. I also take 7 ferriprox per day and it happens the same. It is good that it comes red. It shows you have iron to be chelated. The redder,in fact, the better and if you take vit c, it will help more.

Lena,

Because there have been no studies done with L1 and vitamin C, we have to rely on personal reports on how it has worked for people. How long have you used vitamin C with Ferriprox and how much do you take daily?

Hi Andy, hi jatinder

Glad to have helped.

Yes Andy I take vit C with Ferriprox from the start, which is 5 years ago when I started taking Ferriprox.I take 250 mg per day, preferably with the evening dosage and together with desferal too. It works out well with ferriprox too. Greek thals take vitamin C this way.

Hi Smurfette,

No, I do not go to any Athens hospital. I am transfused in the hospital of Corinth. But are you Greek?
