red blood cell mineral testing
« on: October 13, 2013, 07:49:25 PM »

Hi folks, Andy,

Im thinking of getting my zinc and magnesium levels tested using red blood cell testing, vs the usual serum test.
Given that thals have some wacky shaped cells I'm wondering if the test results will be valid? I'll ask the test lab too.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks folks!!

The shape of the cells should not affect the mineral test. I'll be interested in the results, as this test is purported to give a more accurate assessment of mineral levels.
Andy

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

Thanks Andy.

I got this reply from the lab folks:

The size or shape of the cell matters not, we break them open once they get here anyway.  However, if the cell is too fragile to survive the spinning process intact, there would be a problem.  If the patient’s spun blood samples routinely show signs of hemolysis, a whole blood estimation of minerals may be better

I'll report back if I go ahead.
