Immigration in NZ for alpha thal trait
« on: September 08, 2015, 02:33:55 PM »
My asymptomatic 15 year son has been mentioned as having blood smear and Hb electrophoresis findings consistent with alpha thalasemia trait. There are no abnormal hemoglobins. Only some HbH inclusion bodies on occasional RBC's. Does this pose a problem in visa immigration to New Zealand ? He has slightly low MCV,MCH values. Majority of RBC'S are normocytic with mildly hypochromia. There are some microcytes, poikilocytes, target cells, pencil and ellipsoid cells. No blast cells. No Iron profile or RCDW done. He has been asymptomatic since birth and is now 15 years old with normal growth and no splenomegaly. His hemoglobin is normal at 12

It sounds like he is a silent carrier. Carriers require no medical attention, so this should not affect anything. I don't think it's something that needs to be declared, as it has no effect on his health.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Andy.

But the panel medical clinic here in Singapore has stated the above findings with the comment 'Findings consistent with alpha thalasemia trait', even though no Polymerase Chain reaction genetic analysis has been done. They have already uploaded this Hb Electrophoresis report with the blood smear and other CBC results to the NZ immigration.

Will this have any influence on the outcome of the visa application ? Do these immigration authorities have their own panel to decide on own discretion ?

The NZ website immigration health requirements only state for Beta thalasemia major as being a criteria to refuse visa as it can result in health cost burden to the system.

Please advise on your experience and if you know of similar cases in the past.

Many Thanks.
