Know of any thalassemia testimg in Cambodia
« on: January 21, 2020, 04:39:47 PM »
Does anyone know of anywhere in Cambodia where people can be tested for thalassemia?

Does anyone know of anyone working in the field of thalassemia in Cambodia?

Does anyone know of any doctors in Cambodia working with pathology labs which test for thalassemia? For example, if a Cambodian doctor worked with a Malaysian pathology lab, they should be able to test for thalassemia.

I have been making inquiries, and will share what I found out so far, so it may benefit anyone else wanting this information in Cambodia.

The best place for thalassemia testing in Cambodia appears to be:

Institut Pasteur du Cambodge
No. 5 Monivong Boulevard
Phnom Penh
Cambodia

Tel: (855)23 428 561
Mobile: (855)12 812 003
E-Mail: accueil@pasteur-kh.org

From a brief phone discussion, it seems they do blood tests, but not DNA tests. I am led to believe they can send samples to France for DNA testing.

In Cambodia, very few people have heard of thalassemia. People have poor health, and they don't know why.

In Malaysia it is common knowledge. I read somewhere there is talk of compulsory testing for everyone before they get married.

The carrier rate of alpha and beta thalassemia in Southeast Asia is extremely high, double digit percentages of the population in many countries. These people are virtually ignored by the organizations. It is sad to think about the prospects of anyone with the more severe types of thalassemia in these countries. Even in India, where treatment is available, most of the 10,000 thal majors born there each year get no treatment and succumb early in life. The world has a long way to go in taking care of its people.

I am hoping to increase the awareness with some people. I don't expect to reach large numbers.

For them to know about, and understand thalassemia is the first step.

I expect some people wont care. They just get married, have babies, and hope they are lucky.

I may be able to make a small difference.
