Bill C-51 in Canada
Canadian_Family:
Hello all,
The Bill C-51 is all about stringent regulation of natural products in Canada. I personally think its a good thing as some bad apples may be eliminated but the report says otherwise. Please see link below.

I read a little about it on face book, don't remember the words exactly, but it was definitely something negative written there. :dunno
ZAINI.
Andy Battaglia:
This bill is actually part of an international effort backed by the pharma giants, to restrict the use of supplements and patient access to control over their own health and lives. Similar bills have been promoted throughout the west, including in the US.
I will address this in more detail later, but giving authoritarian powers to bureaucrats is never a good idea. What bureaucrat should be allowed to tell you what and how much you can take? None, to my knowledge. Being trained as a pencil pusher does not give a single bit of expertise to someone about ANY subject. Don't be fooled by slick government propaganda for this bill. If they are so concerned about the health of people, why do they allow so many drugs on the market that are known to cause death? In the US, hundreds of thousands of patients die annually due to doctor and hospital error. How many die from use of supplements? It's a drop in the bucket in comparison, yet somehow, this becomes a crucial issue, rather than addressing the real issues of these nightmares released on the public by big pharm, and corporate medicine. Medicine is big business and it is in the interest of the medical industry to keep the public unhealthy.
I will come back to this topic, as it happens to be something I have been following on the international level for some time.

That may be true and giving powers to the minister as Andy said may be detrimental to have access to natural products. On the other hand, the bill was pushed by the fact that some natural products available in Canada do actually contain harmful ingredients.
We have had a discussion before where some Chinese and Indian (no offence) natural products contains high levels of arsenic and mercury etc. Children were hospitalized due to negative side effects of these drugs. Not all drugs are made equal and some brands are more reliable than others. The question remains with all types of drugs. I am only optimistic about the bill if it works to improve the safety concerns of the general public.
If the bill targets such brands and looks at the safety of drugs than it should be okay, however, how much big pharma companies can intervene is a different matter. We certainly don’t want that.
I really hope the second reading of the bill will improve the context in favour of public.
