Cinnamon
Sharmin:
Andy,
I understand that cinnamon aids in maintaining healthy glucose levels (of course one must have a healthy diet and excercise reginime as well).
While in the US I picked up the following supplement:
Finest Natural Organics
Cinnamon 300mg
Organic Cassia Cinnamon - and it is advised that one take 1 capsule in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Is this a good supplement to give Lil A to protect him from sugar imbalance problems? Perhaps to recommend to others as well?
Thank you kindly,
Sharmin
Andy Battaglia:
Cinnamon has been shown to help control glucose levels and it is recommended for diabetics and anyone struggling with sugar levels. I don't think supplements would be necessary for little A, as long as his glucose levels are normal, but it won't hurt and may give some other benefits besides. I wouldn't worry about being religious about giving him the caps daily, but occasionally would be good. I would also suggest that people get used to using spices regularly in their cooking.
Some of my favorite spices since I was very young, are cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, all very therapeutic spices, and all with plentiful uses with foods, often foods that even kids like, including many desserts. So, when it's time for some sweets and it's very hard for parents to never allow sweets, we can look to homemade goodies, made with nutritious ingredients and natural sweeteners and make sure some of the mentioned spices are added. Cinnamon and nutmeg can be sprinkled on top of applesauce, eggnog etc. Look for ways to incorporate good spices in your cooking and remember that the fresher, the better.
