USE OF WBC FILTER DURING TRANSFUSION

(1/1)

ankita:
PLS CAN ANYONE TELL IS IT BENEFICIAL TO USE WBC FILTER DURING BT

Andy Battaglia:
Yes, it is preferable to take filtered blood, as this cuts down on transfusion reactions. The only reason it is not always used is to save money.

Andy Battaglia:
You can see pictures of leukocyte filters on google at http://www.google.com/images?q=leukocyte+filter&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=w_53TIT-GIW8lQe3rLzsCw&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=5&ved=0CDcQsAQwBA&biw=1366&bih=611

These filter out the white blood cells. The white cells are filtered out so that the recipient is not exposed to so many antibodies, bacteria and viruses during transfusions. We have a discussion about filters at http://www.thalassemiapatientsandfriends.com/index.php?topic=2039.msg17151#msg17151
