PHENOTYPE MATCHED BLOOD
Andy Battaglia:
There is a full analysis of the costs of using phenotype matched blood at http://www.haematologica.org/content/haematol/86/7/742.full.pdf
If it is done universally, it is a cost effective method, and it also means far less transfusion reactions, but I don't think this has been fully implemented anywhere, so the cost savings are not seen.
If the cost can be afforded, it is well worth it to have phenotype matching done.
Sagar:
Thanks andy for all your help. I understand that phenotype matching is to be done with each crossmatching before transfusion, If i am wrong in understanding please correct me.
Thanks
