Well the most common measure of HB (Heamoglobin) is in Grams per Deci-liter (g/dl) of blood.

According to this unit the following are the levels for normal people:

Women: 12.0 to 15.0 g/dl
Men: 14.0 to 17.0 g/dl
Children: 11 to 16 g/dl
Pregnant women: 11 to 12 g/dl

For Thals. this should be kept above 10g/dl

If the 80 that you stated reflects 8g/dl then this might be a little low. However she will feel much better if you keep her Hb well above 10.

Take care, Peace!

Gabri:
Hi Alia,

80 g/l is a littel bit low. The body can be adapted to this levels but you must reminde that by lower Hb levels the enteral iron absorbtion will incerase a lot. To get normal iron absorbtion it is recomanded not to underline 95 g/l HB.

To avoid antibody reactions it is recomanded to give her transfusion with leucocyte filtre or better leucoreduced redpacked cells. Some Thal centers used to centrifuge the blood. Centrifuged 3 times the blood it will eliminate more leucocyte.

Take care

Danielle:
I agree.  I think 8 Hgb is too low for a Thal Major.  Many Thal Intermedias can live with that Hgb without needing a transfusion, but it's not recommended for a Major.  The bone marrow works too hard with a hemoglobin that low, and can cause bone deformities.  Hematologists would rather a Major be kept at least above 10hgb, as Sajid had said.

I must get 2 units of blood, every two weeks, to keep my hemoglobin above 10.  Sometimes, I still end up at a 9 when I return for blood.  I refuse to go every week for blood, though.   :biggrin

Manal:
Dear Danielle :hugfriend

Why it is Okay for intermedia to live with HB 8 without transfusions and majors can't especially that they are the same genetically?

Manal
