Hi Everyone
A year ago we were deciding to have a baby. Many friends on this site helped us with advice and support. On Christmas day we were blessed with a 5.2 lbs, 20 inches baby boy. Thanks to everyone who responded to our questions, especially the Thal moms, and everyone who gave us support and advice. I also want to thank everyone who posts something on this website. Somehow, somewhere your post is of interest to someone.
My wife is Thal Intermedia. I do not have the Thal trait. Prior to her pregnancy she was transfusing every 3-4 months. During the pregnancy, she was transfused every 2 weeks. Her Hgb was kept above 9.5. She was taking multivitamins without iron. During the last 2 months of the pregnancy her hgb shot up to 12 from 9, with just 1 pint of blodd. She surprisingly maintained that level until she gave birth. She maintained a good diet of proteins, fruits and vegetables and managed to put on 23 pounds.
We were fortunate to have experienced and very caring perinatologist from Kaiser and hematologist from University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. The baby unit at St Josephs Hospital was exemplary. Eva Chin from Cooleys Anemia Foundation was a great source of help and support.
Regards
Bharat
