I do not remember in which posts I found questions on osteoporosis, so I am posting this here.
Quote from Gene Reviews :
Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a common complication in adults with thalassemia major and intermedia [Voskaridou & Terpos 2004]. Its origin is multifactorial, making it difficult to manage. Treatment involves appropriate hormonal replacement, an effective regimen of transfusion and iron chelation, calcium and vitamin D administration, and regular physical activity. Specific treatment with bisphosphonates has been attempted with promising results in several studies and confirmed in a randomized trial [Voskaridou et al 2006].

I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A NOTE ON THIS...BEING IN THE PHARMACY INDUSTRY FOR MANY YEARS NOW!!!! I HAVENT HEARD ANY SUCH CROCK ABOUT FOSAMAX CAUSING ATRIAL FIBRILLATION IN WOMEN..
AT MY WORK WE GET UPDATED NEARLY EVERY DAY ON WHAT DRUGS ARE AVAILABLE AND WHAT DRUGS ARE SAFE TO TAKE OR NOT....
SO I WOULD RECOMMEND TO CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL GP IF THEY ARE UPDATED ON THEIR INFORMATION...ON RECENT FINDINGS ABOUT GENERAL EVERYDAY DRUGS...
I HAVE BEEN ON BIOPHOSPHONATES AND I AM DOING REALLY WELL...I AM ON THE YEARLY ONE NOW AND MY BONE DENSITY HAS IMPROVED..

Umair,
Don't delete the post. The study you posted about is a valid study based on observation of over 700 women who used Fosamax. There was an 86% higher incidence of atrial fibrillation in this group.
