Title: Back Pains
Post by: Teacher with Thal. on July 14, 2008, 04:22:08 PM
Hello!  I was wondering if any of you Thal. majors get back pains prior to your transfusions.  For the last 3 years, I've been getting really bad back pains about a week before my transfusion.  The only thing that makes me feel better is to stand up and walk around - even if the pain comes in the middle of the night.  Needless to say, I've had many sleepless nights.  No medicine has seemed to help relieve the back pain.  I just have to suffer through it until it passes.  I'm open for suggestions on preventing or relieving the pain.  Thanks for your help!

Actually if the pain happens only before transfusions, it is most likely related to the low HB level. It is the pain caused by the bone marrow expanding and trying to produce red blood cells. The only solution is to keep the Hb higher or transfuse more frequently.
