thats ok wid the height,,,usually thals dont hav much heights bcuz of the reason that iron interferes in this area ...and those thal wid more height often hav themselves damaged by iron somewhere else ,, i ws "ONLY" damaged in growth and hight by iron ... mine too is 5.1 ........ weight keeps on changing 44-46  ....

actual thing is the height of ur character... not the apparent height .
Reach upto the level that 6" ppl envies ... b more energetic stamina confidence self esteem knowledge and acheivements  .. after which ppl would look upon u ...as a gr8 man .

Umair, it's about genes and your locality.

A similar topic was on another forum and one of their Dutch member is about 6 or 7 feet high. Don't you see the hockey matches. Our players look like kids in front of them.

yeah buddy :
i know that .. but it is for the people who feell that they r  not as tall as  a normal person ... i started this thread to make a thread in which they can asses that is not bcoze of thalasemia ....
and they can feel that they are as tall as normaly other thals r ...

in the other hand i want to say that ... as Iron effect's on the growth it could also  effect on ur height ... in my relatives and cousin they r about around  5.10 ......
i m only 5 feet there is a big diffrence ... it doesn't matter for me ..but it was a general question  to the thal's view ...

Just to clarify this.. I DONT FEEL INFERIOR that I am short... I love my height infact...

As Sajid has mentioned before..It does have to do with genes... But the local part doesnt really count, cause I have relatives that are 6ft tall and they are in australia nd greece....

I also know of alot of Thal Major patients who are tall and their parents who are shorter than they are...

Thank you..

Hi smurfete :
i have replaced the word ...well ... as i mentioned before that it was just to know the percentage of tall thals and short thals ... well if it hurt's you or someone else of this forum then i want to that it could be by mistake  ... i did't mean to hurt someone ...
nothing more to say thank you and all others who participating in this thread ..
i know its a game of genes but there is a little involvement of Hb and IRon overload .... i thinnk that
Andy plz contribute in this thread and plz let me know that i m right or not ????...
i hope ur cntribution could help us to find a fine answer ....for this ...

It's well established that thalassemics are generally shorter in stature than non-thals. However, genetics also plays a role so there are thals over 6 feet tall and some are 4' 6". Bigg even posted a link to a study that showed that thal minors are shorter in general than non carriers at
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15507851

Personally, I wish thals wouldn't let themselves get distracted by issues like their height or youthful appearances. These things aren't really important yet I know thals who don't want to live because they are short. My niece is 4' 10". She isn't thal but she is a mom to 2 kids. She doesn't worry about her height. She's got short parents and is genetically short. My mom was 4' 11', but no one back talked her. It isn't your height. It is your heart. What kind of heart do you have? Are you a strong person? Do you have a good heart? Are you confident in yourself? Are you a person who defines yourself or do you let others define you? I know how Smurfette answers these questions and I think every thal should be the same. Be yourself and define yourself. Don't let a silly think like stature affect your life. Napoleon was short and conquered Europe. Go out and conquer your own worlds and never let your height matter.

@ Hi Andy :
thanx for the post , it helped me alot to understanding the picure...
height and other complications doesn't matter in my case...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
@ every visitor
(1) why i posted this question ???..
it doesn't matter that how i m looking and how tall i m ...
it was for the people who didn't know that Iron (which is big complication in thal) could effect the growth of the patient...soo they will strongly determine to, not to stop chelation... thats y i posted that question.. otherwise i m not worried abt my height .... my way of thinking is  " if i cant change my face then i m happy with it and i have the world's beutifull face " it was an example only ... i mean to say that, stay happy thanx to God, that u have 2 hand and 2 eyes bcoze some people even dont have these... plz read my posts to see the Impression of my positive approach, thoughts & thinking,..

special thanks to you andy for understanding me and exlpaining my words to others ...

I agree totally :biggrin and not just with our heights & weights but our life span.
Drs and text books put a limit on how long we live.... I don't agree.
I believe that I will live a long and fruitful life because thats my goal.
Whether it is short or long... I will make an impact on the people I meet and who know me.
That will be my legacy just like our founder.
Until then I will continue to make my mark in this world and enjoy every second.

Ray ,
you are an inspiration for the thals who think they cant grow tall , soo please do care of your self to impress other thals to take care of their selves and to keep their iron under controle so they can also as tall as you are. .. i  personaly know many thals who think that they cant grow more than 5 feet , but i always say them that if they controle their Fe levels and maintain their Hg above 10 , they can also grow as normal persons ..  soo please doo care of your self for you and for other thals as well ... keep up the good work, keep chelating  and keep fighting against Thalassemia .... Ray,

Have you ever used desferal? I am curious because desferal is the other reason thals are short. It does slow growth. I have seen some tall thals Like Mike Michael but most are short, although it must be taken into account that many of these people would be short genetically anyway.

Andy,

i remember in one of lectures in Singapore, one of the the doctors (can't recall the name now) said that it was discovered that taking desferal before the age of 2 years cause the bones of the vertabra to flaten anf therefore leading to a short vertabra compared to the limbs whose growth is not affected. From the above we conclude that the measurement of spinal cord is an essential procedure during the administration of desferal

Wow, dude!!! That is seriously tall ..... I do hope u r trying out to be a fast bowler (a la Ishant)!!

I am 5' 10" and weigh 60 kgs and used limited desferal.
My good friend Ashish was 5' 6" and used to weigh more than me - and Ashish was on desferal for a long time - it did not seem to have affected his height, although his mom is much taller. DFO did affect his ears, though.

Cheers

I am not quiet sure, but what i know is an average of 5 cm per year. The best thing is to asses the child genetically according to his parents' height

I think that the best one who can answer this is the endocrinologist who is familiar with thalassemia. He/She can evaluate her growth genetically according to her parents' height and give you in which percentile she fits

Hi All,

Just thought I would share my secret too  :wink
I'm 152 (5 feet even) and weigh 42-43 kgs.

I'm the shortest in my family, however, my mom is about 5'1'' or 5'2'', so, not that much different. My brother is also shorter than my dad. Everyone accept me in the family is non-thal, Alhumdulillah.
I'm the chosen one!  :wink

All my siblings' height is between my mom and dad's height.

I do believe that if you take care of yourself and keep your levels as close to normal as possible, and get evaluated routinely, it's possible to reach the normal height dependant on your genetic makeup. My levels have always been way out of range, and still, I reached the 5 feet mark!

One other thing I would add to our qualities is that thals generally look pretty young  :wink, definiltey something everyone wishes to have... I have a sis 5 yrs younger than me, and everyone thinks I'm the youngest in the family!

Wish you all the happiness in the world!

My new-to-me 12 year old daughter is 4' 9 inches and 85 pounds. Her medical care was severely lacking, but I thought her height was from the poor nutrition and the constant junk food diet she was receiving. I wonder if she will grow a little more now that her diet has changed and supplements are started?
Title: Re: thalassemics and height and weight
Post by: Andy Battaglia on February 20, 2010, 08:44:30 PM
Your intervention at this point will make a huge difference to your daughter's health. You can only wait and see if she grows taller, but more importantly will be what you can't see in terms of bone and organ health, and this is where proper nutrition will make a big difference. This will also be reflected in her mental abilities which will also benefit. A good diet and good nutrition makes a big difference for children in terms of their clarity of thought and their ability to understand and retain information.

The growth, height depends on many factors the prominent among them are the amount of iron deposits in the body and the organs responsible for growth. The age also counts and the proper nutrition outstands all other reasons as Andy said.

nutrition paves way for better mental ability and over all health ... but for height its not cuz the most starved ppl u see are the most tallest ... example african countries .... for a thalassemic , height depends upon the level of irondeposits...

I am 6'2" 185lbs. When I was younger I was the smallest child in my class for a long time. By 14yrs old I had a growth spurt and grew straight up. By 18yrs old I was the 2nd tallest in class and was still growing. My father is 5'11" and my mom is 5'9" or so. I never had any other treatment besides blood transfusions. I was almost put on chelation, but was able to reduce the iron in my system.

I agree with you all about it's not about the size of a person, but their character that makes them big.

Take care of yourselves.

Surendra,
The best thing is followup with an endocrinologist to make growth assessment for your daughter. The doctor will also need the height of both parents to evaluate the height according to parents rather than using the standard tables for height.
The most important thing in this issue is the growth rate as it should be at least constant
