My son was transfused yesterday. tonight he suddenly began feeling pain in his left leg - on the calf just below the knee. He feels pain upon movement or tensing his leg muscles. He also feels pain if I touch the spot. There is a blue bruise the size of a quarter where it hurts. There does not appear to be any swelling of the leg or foot. I am afraid that it may be a clot. He has started a lot of new meds lately. Please help!!

Sharmin, to my knowledge when there is a clot, the leg becomes red and swollen. Why don't you take him to the hospital right away. Please update us. hope it is nothing serious, praying for him :hugfriend

Oh dear,
I hope it's nothing serious.
Did he get hurt or did anything hit him in that place unknowingly?
-
Absolutely always take your child in if any reaction occurs after a transfusion. Please let us know about your son ASAP.

Hi Sharmin :
i m :agree to the people above ...sajid is right..
Did he get hurt or did anything hit him in that place unknowingly?
andy' advise is the best ..zaini is hoping that he will b fine .. and manal is that it is not clot ... i think that it is (barsaat) over here in south asia region so it could be bcoze of any worm bite ... and it is nothing serious doctor will prescribe him a medicines those to controle the infection .. dont worry he will b fine ..... take him to the doctor and please keeep us updated ... Hi Sharmin,
If you are concerned than take him to the doctor or emergency for a check out. Since he had a transfusion so its better to strike any doubts. Please keep us updated.
-
It is likely a superficial clot (thrombophlebitis) and won't require a lot of treatment, but it is necessary to show to the doctor immediately to make sure it isn't anything more serious.
From http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/thrombophlebitis/DS00223/DSECTION=treatments%2Dand%2Ddrugs
If thrombophlebitis occurs in a superficial vein, your doctor may recommend self-care steps that include applying heat to the painful area, elevating the affected leg and using a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. The condition usually subsides within a week or two.

Thank you everyone,
my husband took him in to emergency last night. it was a long time, it took 5 hours for a doctor to check him. But thank god, it is only an injury, they ruled out a clot. I am so thankful about that. They believe that he tore a muscle while running around and playing earlier in the day. Thank you all so much for your support.

Sharmin,
It's really good to hear that it's not related to the transfusion, and also that he's feeling enough like himself to be getting the normal bangs and bruises. :biggrin

Sharmin,
Glad to hear that the little one doesnt have any clots...As Andy and some others have said...You should take him to the emergency dept if not feeling well... Especially after a transfusion...
As Andy said as well having a blood clot, his leg would have been reddish to purple in colour and would have felt cold...
I have had blood clots in the lungs and that wasnt fun either...I had alot of pain...
Take care
