Mickey,
This is very interesting and after a quick perusal it appears that the antibacterial, antidiabetic, anti inflammatory etc effects would be valuable for thalassemia and sickle cell anemia alike. Also the positive effect on the vascular system could be beneficial for patients affected by both disorders. We cannot underestimate the effects of natural substances on our health. I have heard a lot about various qualities of mushrooms and health benefits.
Moreover, as with any herb, variation between preparations and potential negative side effects cannot be ruled out.
The variation in preparation of herbal medication should be considered when using any of these types of remedies.
I think that this herb is worth further investigation as being possibly helpful in thalassemia. I will spend some more time looking through this soon. Andy is our real expert when it comes to vitamins, herbs and supplement and he may find this very interesting.

Yes Mickey, i have read about it, there are more than 200 species of Ganoderma and each for a different organ. It does not help thal directly ( some report that it may increase time between transfuions) but keep the body in good shape in terms of inceasing immunity, getting rid of toxins, increasing metabolism, building up new cells enabling each cell to work at its max capacity. This Ganoderma is what is called Lingzhi which s one of the species that are made into pills. There are different pills depending on the time of harvesting and each for different function
i do believe very much that there are a lot of benefits ad secrets behind many natural plants or herbs but we still don't know a lot about them
Since you will attend the conference, it will be a pleasure for all of us if you update as with what you know there.
Hope Kabir is doing well :hugfriend

Watch this,
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2042252397942128109
In this video, According to Dr Hasegawa Eiichi ( Doctor of medical science former professor of Kyoto muncipile medical university ) Taken regularly Red Reishi ( or Ganoderma) has shown a strong impact on diseases caused by poor blood circulation,in herbal form red reishi can purify blood by enhancing circulation and eliminating toxins like monosodium glutomate, ciggarate tar and other harmful chemicals and drugs from the body, red reishi helps lower cholestrol and also prevents formation of blood clots ,and increase the metabolic activity of blood cells .
But what about the iron content? Does it contain any?over all it seems like a helpful herb for thals.

What i know is that it is found in the form of pills, but i don't know a certain brand name. I just read about it as one species of mushrooms. I know it is manufactured by some companies in India and China.
You can read about it in this link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingzhi
http://www.reishi.com/
This is also a link for FAQ, i find it very useful
http://www.reishi.com/FAQ.htm#15
It is one of the natural food that works as antioxidant, increases immunity, regulates body functions, increases the usage of oxygen in the blood and normalises liver functions. All this is important to one's health especially thal because as you know they are under sever stress.
What are all the benefits of Reishi?
The following table was found in a published article titled Medicinal mushrooms: their therapeutic properties and current medical usage with special emphasis on cancer treatments from Cancer Research UK.
Table - Pharmacological effects of whole Reishi extracts in vivo and in vitro
Analgesic
Anti-allergic activity
Bronchitis-preventative effect, inducing regeneration of bronchial epithelium
Anti-inflammatory
Antibacterial, against Staphylococci, Streptococci, and Bacillus pneumoniae (perhaps due to increased immune system activity)
Antioxidant, by eliminating hydroxyl free radicals
Antitumor activity
Antiviral effect, by inducing interferon production
Lowers blood pressure
Enhances bone marrow nucleated cell proliferation
Cardiotonic action, lowering serum cholesterol levels with no effect on triglycerides, enhancing myocardial metabolism of hypoxic animals, and improving coronary artery hemodynamics
Central depressant and peripheral anticholinergic actions on the autonomic nervous sytem reduce the effects of caffeine and relax muscles
Enhanced natural killer cell (NK) activity in vitro in mice
Expectorant and antitussive properties demonstrated in mice studies
General immunopotentiation
Anti-HIV activity in vitro and in vivo
Improved adrenocortical function
Increased production of Interleukin-1 by murine peritoneal macrophages in vitro
Increased production of Interleukin-2 by murine splenocytes in vitro
Key active constituents :
Beta and hetero-Beta-glucans (antitumour, immunostimulating )
Ling Zhi-8 protein (anti-allergenic, immuno-modulating)
Ganodermic acids – triterpenes (anti-allergenic agents, cholesterol and blood pressure reducing

I personally don't know any thal who has tried it but i just read once (actually don't know where :-\) that it can increase time between transfusions.
I will search more about it and let you know if i find anything new

Manal ,
Thanx for the reply , :thankyou2
Umair

Umair,
I don't know about the availability or how is it is sold. From what I have read and from viewing Manal's response I think that it could be very useful for thals.
The qualities about Reiki that have been described deal with most of the issues thalassemia patients suffer from. Oxidative stress, infection, inflammation, adrenal function, hypoxia, possible malignancy due to iron, cardio pulmonary issues, hypertension etc etc. I think that it is really worth looking into. Is it a good thing to use for young children?
Mickey, please let us know what you find out at the conference.

Which Reishi product is right for me?
Reishi products are available in tablet, capsule, or granular form. A good Reishi product should be in an extract or essence form (For more about this, see Question 12.).
Like any other product, not all Reishi are created equal. Reishi products have different levels of quality depending on the manufacturer. Factors such as the method of cultivation, the quality of the plant's mother fungi, the growing conditions, and the processing method used to extract the Reishi essence from the Reishi mushroom all play an important role in determining the potency of a Reishi product.
As the Japanese are the originators for cultivating Reishi commercially, products from Japan generally use the best cultivation technique called the natural wood log method to cultivate high-grade Reishi.
Before deciding on which product to use, also make sure that it is properly and clearly labelled with the ingredients, extract ratio, manufacturer or importer address, and product origin. Any authentic, high-quality, and safe health supplement will contain this information.
What is the difference between black Reishi and red Reishi?
Only six kinds of Reishi have been studied in greater detail to uncover potential health benefits – red, black, blue, white, yellow and purple Reishi. Of these six types, black and red Reishi have demonstrated the most significant health-enhancing effects, and both are therefore widely used in the global health supplement market today.
However, red Reishi has been proven to be the most effective in improving one’s overall health by enhancing the immune system, many bodily functions, and vital organs. Black Reishi (Ganoderma sinensis), is fairly common and can be found in most Chinese herbal shops. This species of Ganoderma tends to be unevenly shaped and can measure up to ten inches in diameter, although most mature specimens are about six inches in diameter. The majority of Reishi products that claim to be using "wild". Reishi generally use black Reishi. While it still possesses some value as a moderate herbal tonic, black Reishi is considered to be inferior to red Reishi because of its lower polysaccharide content.
