List of supplements those mentioned by Zaini sis,
Ayesha,
My daughter takes Vidaylin Syrup as multi vitamin,it does not contain any iron and have only 50 mg of Vitamin C,perhaps you can take Vidaylin-T tablets which contain,
From http://www.abbott.com.pk/ViDaylin.htm#e
VIDAYLIN-T
Ingredient(s): Each ViDaylin-T filmtab tablet contains: Composition
Vitamin A 2500 IU
Vitamin D 400 IU
Vitamin E 15 IU
Folic Acid 300 mcg
Vitamin B1 1.05 mg
Vitamin B2 1.2 mg
Vitamin B6 1.05 mg
Vitamin B12 4.5 mcg
Vitamin C 60 mg
Niacin 13.5 mg
I want to talk about zainab's supplementation in a bit detail, currently i am giving her ABOCAL half tablet daily, by "ABBOT LABORATORIES" .A full tablet contains calcium carbonate 670 mg,equivalent to 268 mg of elemental calcium, Vitamin D 400 I.U, Vitamin C 500 mg, Vitamin B6 10 mg . I am giving her half tablet daily (prescribed by her hemo),so all values would be divided in half. And she is taking another multi vitamin called VIDAYLIN ,again by ABBOT LABORATORIES, It says that each 5 ml teaspoonful contains Vitamin A U.S.P 0.9 mg (3000 units) ,Vitamin D U.S.P 10 mcg (400 units), Vitamin B1 U.S.P 1.5 mg, Vitamin B2 U.S.P 1.2 mg, Vitamin B6 U.S.P 1.0 mg, Vitamin B12 U.S.P 3.0 mcg, Vitamin C U.S.P 50 mg, Nicotinamide U.S.P 10 mg.
I know it's a lot of details and i am sorry to bother you with this, but doctors don't want to go in that much details, and i don't want any point to be left, and also that i am worried about her magnesium and zinc supplementation, there is another version of VIDAYLIN called VIDAYLIN-M which contains all the minerals like magnesium and zinc but it also contains iron,so obviously it's not suitable for her, when i asked my physician to name me any supplement with magnesium and zinc but not iron
Ayesha,
Although i am not a doctor but i'll advise you some brands, but please check with the doctor first,
I think you should be taking,Folic acid,(Folitab or any other tab, daily),calcium +Vitamin D (Chew cal ,daily),half a tab of Abocal after starting desferal,Vitamin E (Tokosvit 1 or two tabs, daily),Zincat syrup (containing Zinc, two spoonful, daily).I am sorry i am unable to locate any brand containing megnesium.Add a multi vitamin with out iron and with out a high dose of vitmin C.For that you'll have to bug the chemist.
Along with all these my daughter is taking IP6,wheat grass and carao

List of supplements those mentioned by Sharmin Sis
Andy, I am considering Kindervital for my son - as per Canadian Family's post - and the link provided. I am also giving him vit e and folic acid and vit e, wheat grass and IP6. I am currently giving him cal mag which is probably geared toward adults - perhaps it would be best to switch him to the kindervital
.
Dear Teresa,
I will look into this for you. Swiss vitamins are very readily available at pharmacies, grocery stores and health food stores in Canada so I just assumed that they would be in the US as well.
Has anyone else seen these vitamins on the shelf in the US?
Can you PM me and let me know which city & state you live in and I can try to find out for you? You can also print out the list of ingredients to see if there is another brand that is similar in content to this one.

Hi Zaini,
I noticed you are trying to determine what kind of vitamin is best for Zainab. We use Kindervital which is derived from natural sources and is iron free and source of Calcium and vitamin D. The contents have very minimum vitamin C only to aid in absorption of calcium and vitamin D. This product is specially designed with children in mind and geared towards better bone health and improved immune system. I am providing the link below for you.

Andy
don't know if you'll find any multi vitamin that does not have vitamin C in it. I know recently we had some discussion about a specific children's brand that had only a small amount of C in it. One brand is called Yummi Bears. It has 30 mg of C and no iron. Try to find something like this for a good variety of vitamins with some minerals. You can see the label at
http://www.yummibears.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=1&page=1
An example of an easy to take liquid calcium supplement can be seen at
http://www.iherb.com/productdetails.aspx?c=1&pid=7657
It has the basics; calcium, magnesium and vitamin D.
I am not promoting any specific supplements but am only giving examples of appropriate supplements for thals. Safe and effective products that are appropriate for thals are on the market but sometimes you have to hunt around a bit.
Andy, let me know buddy if i missed something to metnion here ... and you may also edit this post + thread ....

Hi Sis , in my last visit i was talkng to my Haemo about Anti-oxidants , she told me that i can take carrot mixed with olive oil as an anti-oxidant and it will be good , when my bro asked to her to cook my meals in olive oil , she told us the same you are saying in your post that i quoted above , she said dont heat olive oil, heating could change its effectiveness.... she said it better to give olive oil by mixing that in Salad or when you are going to give that in meals then dont heat that , you may put olive oil in Meal after completing the cooking procedure ( in last after turning off the burner/oven)......

Umair,
You are correct about multivitamins and viamin C. However, you can get brands with fairly lo quantities of C...75 mg or less. This is about what you get from an orange.
Olive oil can be heated but not to high temperatures like other oils because it will burn.
-
Olive oil can be heated but not to high temperatures like other oils because it will burn.
:exactly Andy ,
reason wat i got of why doctors says no to heat olive oil is " they dont want to go in detailss that you may heat it not more than this temprature or they dont want to left a chacne of burning the vitamins and anything thing that olive oil contains and that is on risk of being burnt by heat ...
i think consuming olive oil by putting it in salad or with carrot is the easiest and the finest way to consume it with its full strength of being an anti-oxidant ...
Best Regards and Thanx Andy for confirming that :) ...

Umair,
These multivitamins you mentioned should NOT be taken by thals. 50 mg iron salts??? Don't even ask. It is off limits. Centra Silver is NOT Centrum Silver. Centrum contains no iron. I can't vouch for elsewhere, but almost every single multivitamin available in the US is also available in a no iron version.
If they contain iron, don't even consider them.
-
Andy,
Is synthetic version of Vit E harmful or just not as good as Vit E from natural source?
Thanks,
SF
-
My doctor told me not to take more than 100 IU of synthetic E a day. (I don't take it anyway. I've always taken natural). Synthetic E is a by-product of the camera film making process. I seriously doubt its value and there are negatives with higher doses. Many thals take up to 1000 IU daily of vitamin E. Since you're in the US, I would highly recommend Puritan.com as a source of good quality natural vitamins at good prices.
-
Synthetic E is a by-product of the camera film making process
I would never wanna take that nasty thing... I'm glad I asked the question and you replied in this detail... Thank you so much, Andy! I have been looking at the local stores for good multivit, but now, I think I'm gonna give up and Puritan is the way to go, I now believe!
Once again,

Umair,
Those posts are old,i am not giving Lil Z Abocal anymore, just make this thread about what everyone is taking right now,Like right now i am giving Lil Z ,
Osteocare = once daily
Carao = 4 tea spoons daily
Neurobion = Once in a couple of days (Vitamin B1 100 mg,B6 200 mg,B12 200 mcg)
Vidaylin = One Tea spoon,(a multi vitamin for kids, but not all vitamins are in enough quantity)
Vitamin E = 400 IU daily (in natural form)
Zinc Syrup = One teaspoon daily contains 10 mg zinc
IP6 = Three caps daily
Folic acid = 10 mg daily
I hope i am not missing anything,i think that would be better to know what everyone is taking right now,so others would be able to compare if they are missing anything.
Zaini.

Zaini
Commenting on your post,
1- Osteocare whether chewable or syrup should be given twice a day
2- My hema told me to give the 400mg of vitamin E alternating days (cause it is already a big dose for children)
3- Though the extra folic is washed out of the body through urine, it is enough to take a 5mg dose
manal
-
Thanks Manal,
She is taking Osteocare Syrup right now,i'll give her twice a day from now on,I thought Andy said 400 IU of Vitamin E was ok daily :huh.
Zaini.
-
400-1000 IU vitamin E daily is fine for adults but for younger children, 100-200 IU daily is more appropriate.
-
Hi Andy,
As you know, I am trying to ensure that lil A catches up on growth. He started desferal at 18months, which is good in terms of avoiding iron stores - but it may have caused a growth delay. I am glad that he is on exjade now.
He is having Osteocare chewables, which have 10mg of zinc. Is this enough zinc for him? I have been told that zinc aids in growth for thals.
Thanks Andy,
Sharmin
-
Sharmin,
The Standard of Care Guidelines for Thalassemia report the US dietary standards for ages 9-13 as having a high limit of 23 mg zinc per day. Of course, this is for non-thals and thals may need a bit more than this depending on the case. You can safely double little A's dose.
I have caught the terrible cold going through my household and am very sick right now. I have never had such body symptoms from a cold. For the time being, I will have to keep my online time to a minimum.
-
Thanks for the info Andy, please take care of yourself and get better. We will manage on the site, be sure to get a lot of rest.
Sharmin
-
Andy,
Please get some rest and take your time :flowers.
Zaini.
-
Andy, please remember Dr. Mercola's advice of taking mega doses of vitamin D for the first 3 days of the col and hopefully it will cut down the symptoms.
Wishing you a speedy recovery my friend :getwell
