Hello everyone....
Why not learn a little more about each other....maybe we can start with our hobbies....
Me personally, I like to write-mostly poetry sometimes prose. I love music and also watch movies-mostly a sucker for romance....!I like to read too, but here have a limited choice of English literature!
These days am beginning to take a keen interest in cooking and guess am doing a good job of it! And yeah I love meeting people and making new friends and learning something new from them!
Do write in....
Take care.

Hmmm... Hobbies :wink I love reading books, everything or anything, internet is like a contact for me with outside world, its like a wonderland for me,and i get lost in it like Alice did in wonderland :biggrin and now a days i have a new hobby which i am obsessed with, and you know what i am talking about so i am not gonna mention it here :wink.
Other then that,i am a house wife, mother of two,so i won't say cooking is exactly my hobby :rotfl it used to be once, like i used to write once, both poetry and prose, but gone are the days now....
Hope i didn't bore you :rotfl
Zaini.

Not at all bored Zaini...
I just thought that this way we can all share aspects of our life other than the usual tests, levels, tensions, stresses...like Gaurav has said in one of his introductory posts that thal is just one aspect of our lives and we as a family are here to share more than just that, right?
....waiting for others to write in too...

Madhavi,
a good idea indeed.
Well, I like reading a lot--which is why I became a translator of Arabic Literature. In fact I combined my two favourite pastimes - reading literature and learning foreign languages - and after retiring from the bank I started a second carreer, that of a translator. In Greece, there is a State Law for people with thalassaemia: they can retire after 15 years of service and get a full pension. That's what I did and now I occupy myself more creatively.
Apart from that, I love travelling, going out with one or two special friends - but that's that, I am not very social - going on an excursion, watching theatre and of course writing in this site -- that' s
something I have been following for the last two years and I am happy for it.<Thanks, Andy!>
Lena.

Hobbies? I don't have time for them ;-(. I'll think about what my hobbies were in the past. All I can that reading was the hobbie I used to do the most.

Hi there
This topic is a really good idea.
I have two and a half hobbies.
One is reading, I love reading, I get lost in the book, I live other lives. I used to read a lot as an adolescent and I still read a lot, I starve for a book sometimes.
Another is gardening which I started during my adolescence too, like Kathy I also try to grow my own things, easier for flowers but more difficult for vegetables(because I do not use pesticides at all). So in front of my house there are flowers and in my backyard, there are herbs, chillies, strawberries and some green leafy vegetables. I also like having fresh flowers on my table but when they grow in my garden I do not have the heart to cut them, so for my tables, I end up buying.
The half hobby is walking. I say half because I enjoy doing it but nowadays, I do not have the time. Like Kathy I too enjoy walking on the beach, I want to walk as far as it leads me. I used to do it with my father but since I got married, I stopped since my husband does not like walking at all and the beach we now go to is very small. I am waiting for the kids to grow up a bit to start that over again. The feel of the sand under the feet and the water splashing against the ankle, there's nothing like it.
As Zaini said for cooking, it was also a hobby for me in my adolescent years but now that I have to do it everyday, it is not a hobby anymore. But I enjoy coming up with new recipes, I go to restaurants for that reason. I try to reproduce what I enjoyed there and this is how I get new recipes. But I won't classify this as a hobby.

I forgot one of my hobbies :biggrin and i think its every women's secret hobby :biggrin guess what ?? :wink.
-
I have a couple of guesses....
1)Shopping-but it couldnt be a secret!
2)Mirror gazing-possibly....
3)Window shopping-could be a part secret!
4)Dreaming of modelling or something as glamorous...
Suddenly I have a feeling that maybe it may not be any of these...so will stop guessing!Lol
-
Hmm..... nice topic you started, anyway as for me reading books as well, cooking and watching movies on big screen ( movie theatres) I also love surfing the net and eating lol! :wink
-
What about gossiping,Zaini?
I do not want to be rude but some women love it.
-
Hi Lena
Hobbies are suppose to make one happy , to have an interest of some kind:rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl where as gossips can bring on stress , accompany with lots trouble at time : :tantrum :tantrum :tantrum :tantrum :tantrum :tantrum ,but some might say its harmless ,I suppose it depand on what type.
If a woman has hobbies she hasn't got time for gossips :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl
this is my point of view some may defer
Kathy
-
Gossiping I guess is more of a habit than a hobby, right?
Its nice to read about such varied hobbies here...
Reading about your gardening bits, I could almost imagine your houses with the lovely yards...I wish I had such a house and such a blessing with gardening...I remember I had tried my hand at growing stuff when in school but was an utter disaster...so I stopped it!
Walking is a good thing too-can be a lot of things at the same time-sharing time with someone or even oneself, admiring the scenes around or plain reflecting about life! But these days one is confined by many things like time or commitments to be able to devote time to things like that!
And about writing in at this site and being here daily is more like an addiction than a hobby what say guys?
Nice to know about you all....
-
ok ok I'm addicted to this message board :wub :wub :wub
Manojmass one can still have a small garden even if one don't have a yard, one can grow stuff in pots, on the balcony.one need to have the passion for gardening without it ,it wouldnt work :biggrin
you are funny, thank for the laugh :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl
Please Zaini :faint2 :faint2 :faint2 :faint2stop the guessing game please tell us I would like to know
take care Kathy
-
My passion for pots and plants is not as much as that for pots and pans I guess...so I would rather stick to cooking for now...I tried the plant growing bit in pots and ground and balcony too but I just seem to have that 'touch' which is more like the 'touch me not' for plants I think! ...I am glad you could have a laugh!
Yeah...Zaini what is that secret hobby?...do tell us please please...
-

Hobbies.....Hmm... :idea
I suppose it would depend on my mood or attention. hehehe
I like having a vege garden and flowers in tubs, talking, reading, writing, spending time with loved ones, arts and craft, making flax flowers or gifts, going to secondhand shops with my mum, roaming around with my mother, crocheting, animals, cross stitch, taking photos, making movies, learning new things and trying new techniques with computer programmes, being with my nieces and nephews, playing games (electronic or board), laughing, sharing and being happy. And IF there's a moment..... I like putting my feet up.
-
this is really a nice idea..............
i m very glad to know that most of us here are book readers and i m feeling more comfortable here......................hmmmm :dunno :dunno
i have a number of hobbies but the most favourite is none other than ..... reading books!!!!
i can read every thing either it is of concern to me or not...........i can produce reading material for me wherever i go.......... i love to read novels and books during journey.

As for me, i like hand craft. I am engaged in candle making, used to do a lot of sculpture and pottery (no time for this now), reading (time is very limited now, i spend more time on internet).
I believe that hobbies are so important especially as one gets older and older

i love to read Russian writers especially Feuder Dastofiski (pardon me w.r.t spellings), Talstai, Mekhail Sholokhof, now i m also intending to read Garcia Marquez
-
Just saw this thread today, let me see what I can share..
(Did anyone notice that many thals have creative interests? Especially writing? I spend a lot of my time being tired, so my activities are generally slow!)
I am passionate about Dancing, its in my blood!
:boogie
Only few minutes at a time. I love writing and reading, and anything creative - be it cooking, stitching, drawing, interior decorating, even minor household repairs - :biggrin
I cant spend much time on the net - it gives me terrible headaches, but given the chance, I would read and interract with you all for hours on end! :wub
I joke a lot once i get to know people, I am good at counselling too. I feel life is too short to spend in worries, and when I do see someone who is stressed, I try to step in and help comfort them. Humour works best for me, even at my worst! As a result its become a hobby - I enjoy making others laugh... :happydance
Learning new things appeal to me - keeps the mind sharp and distracted too. :wink Today i was trying to see how fast I can read a newspaper upside down!
I love Sudoku - the puzzle. Its my usual late night hobby if i cant sleep due to some discomfort.
Hugging is a hobby too ----- :grouphug
-
I've just seen the messages -- I was away for a while --- and come on, guys "gossiping" was meant to be a joke but it didn't hit the target--well, next time.
Lena.
There is a quote that says - "A guilty conscience pricks the mind."
I am smiling non stop after I read what you wrote here Lena, A lot of us gossip for sure, but do we really admit we enjoy it sometimes?? :grin
Its quite a relif that you were joking.... :rotfl
-
Madhavi,
a good idea indeed.

In fact I combined my two favourite pastimes - reading literature and learning foreign languages - and after retiring from the bank I started a second carreer, that of a translator. Lena.
Lena. you are such an interesting woman. I also love foreign languages. I am very interested in your job, because since almost 6 months we try to get publish (and translate) a book from a friend. Recently we received not so good news, so this person is very sad. So if you have any tips.. As for Arabic. I have one friend who studied Arabic, one friend who studied Arabic Philosophy and a mother who learns Arabic.
Now i must first read the rest of the topic. I was joking when I said I have no hobbies. Ofcourse I have them, I only find rarely the time to do it.
Reading: books, law, medical, science, diaries, biography, history, geograpic. You name it, and I will read it. (You can always give me tips). My next target will to start reading poetry. That's not really my interest, but I know it will be good for me. Any tips/help is welcome.
Writing: but I don't do it anymore in the way I used to do it.
Music: more listen than creating music myself nowadays.
cooking.. Especially things from abroad
gardening: used and never in the winter
travelling; more in my dreams, books and TV programs
And in the past I was very creative with paint, but I lost that completely. That's probably the worst change
Photos: Before the summer I was working hard to work my photo bags away in photo albums.
I have the feeling that I do forgot something, but I cant remember what at the moment.
-
I forgot one of my hobbies :biggrin and i think its every women's secret hobby :biggrin guess what ?? :wink.
Eating chocolates? :biggrin
-
Dore,
It was answered above :biggrin
Well, Madhavi's guess was right,i was talking about shopping, there is nothing better then retail therapy :rotfl.
Zaini.
-
Zaini,
Dore is still dreaming about her own secret hobby - which I am guessing is - shopping for chocolates and eating them.
(It COULD be my secret hobby too.. but I'm not telling... )
:smiley
-
Chocolates.
I am not used to them because my parents were told that I could not eat it anymore after I lost my gallbladder and spleen. I dont eat it often. In the past it gave me a sore throat, but I guess I am getting used of it. :rotfl I adore Belgium chocolates - it's even nice to look at them :biggrin
-
Dore,
Thanks for your vote of confidence. I've just sat in front of my laptop and read all messages. What kind of book are you talking about? I'll be happy to share with you anything you want to ask. Generally speaking, it is too difficult for publishers to proceed to publish Arabic. I know that this happens in Greece as well as worldwide. Arabic culture is so different from West culture and publishers believe it will not sail. It took a lot of hunting on my part, to manage to persuade my editor to dive into Arabic Literature and thank God, he is a brave man, a brave editor and he finally did it. But this is rare and I know this happens abroad, too.
Pretty,
I am glad someone finally commented on my referring to that "gossip" thing, thank you. I was just joking, of course.
Lena.
-
You all are really something....to have so many hobbies and be good at so many things and be so creative is something worth a standing ovation for each of you.....................
Madhavi
-
Lena, the publisher wants more and more time and the writer get more and more :(
I just read my hobbies and realised I do none of them! (Except reading a book. I am reading a book from P. Vincency in Englsh - it's not literate I believe)
-
I just read my hobbies and realised I do none of them!
:rotfl :grin
is this a girls' only section? so low posts by boys hehe . I guess cuz gossip has to do more wid it.
My hobbies:
eating in-and-out,and watching cooking shows and ALWAYS DAY-DREAMING of learning cooking myself! :rotfl ... bodybuilding, sports mainly cricket football ..fav EPL team CHELSEA ... watching TV talk shows, english movies whether funny romantic action but mostly with a good story line. Not much interested in ZERO-STORY-ALL-ACTION films... 2 days ago i saw mel gibson's movie in which after an accident he could listen wutever women THINKS...and woooo hooow wut a comedy it was :rotfl ...uncovering women back-of-the-mind-dirty-things :rotfl … with apologies to dear ladies, I know men hav more worse things than that :rotfl.
playing videogames :letsgo, love to b a vagabond wid my friends and cousins, roaming around. And for reading I must say I hate poetry and I ONLY read wikipedia ..i open it up and read and try to study about anything that comes in my mind. Just 3 days before my topic of interest was about WW2 , the holocaust, the medieval kings and wars. And there I studied a love story too, that is very tragic and very true and I guess more impressive than any other story that was of Peter Abelard and Heloise. :hissyfit
Right now lifestyle is bit disturbed as ive just graduated and looking for job….being unemployed, daily routine is to watch Talk shows, eat delicious Arabic plus paki food, wikipedia, facebook, window messenger, movies, and videogames

Hello!
I don't have a lot of hobbies but I have some.
The first one is more than a hobby, it is a need. I need listening to music. I get too stressed when I can't do it.
The second one is travelling. In fact, now I'm in Nottingham (UK) for 5 days.
Finally, I love being outdoors. It doesn't matter if I'm shopping, having a coffee or studying, I need to be somewhere at the sun out of home.
I do other things but it is not really a hobby, it is just entertainment. I sometimes play cards, cook or read when I feel tired but it is not that I want to do that, it's just that I can't do the others.
Kisses to everybody.
Laura.
-
I love comedy - no matter how stressed or unwell I am, if i can get myself to watch comedies, or read funny stuff - I feel somewhat better. It increases our happy hormones and helps us heal. I have a voice clip somewhere of a lil baby laughing - I play it just once and start giggling myself.
I love writing funny stuff too. I guess that makes humor/comedy my hobby?
:yes
-
I really love Comedy Preety. I need to laugh to be ok. I feel it is necessary for everybody but it is essencial for the people that usually don't feel good.
-
Laura,
I have an unusual problem. lol.. I start giggling even before the joke starts. It drives others really mad - but once I'm laughing, we forget the joke in question, and everybody laughs.
I really think humor gets me through the toughest of times.
I am usually very jittery even with blood tests since i bruise easily and my pain tolerance is extremely low. But my last test i was groaning in pain and laughing at some joke at the same time. I sounded a bit like aaa eeeeeeeeeee aaaaaa haaa haaa haaaaa aaaaaaaaa eeeeee ....

Hmmm, hobbies: I like to make jewelery from glass beads or cristals or half gemstones like rock cristal, lapis lazuli, sweet water pearls etc.
I also play World of Warcraft with my husband and I like playing mindless games on facebook :rotfl
I also like to read.
But I have so many interests, that I have to little time sometimes. I work 18 hours a week, am active with OSCAR (patient organisation in the Netherlands for thal and sickle cell) and I am treasurer on the PTA of my sons school. I think I need a cook and cleaner for my house so I will have more time for hobbies! :rotfl
I used to go horsebackriding. Did that for over 20 years. Stopped when I was 30 weeks pregnant with my son, cause my big belly prevented me from getting on the horse :grin
When my daughter is born and I have time left ( :rotfl) I want to start riding again.

How do you all find time for your hobbies? Since posting my hobbies here I have only do them once or twice.
-
Lets make this topic active again. This way we get to know each much much better.
Speaking of me, I am 17. I am a webmaster and I make and run several forums and sites. I generate income from my sites. Soon I've plans for making a separate income which would be only donated and helped towards Thal major person. Suffering from such a disease, I know what it takes and what are its heavy costs.
I'd be happy if I could help them. After all, we live in deeds, not in years. :)
