Title: Vit D and Calcium Dosage?
Post by: Prets on November 10, 2009, 10:28:29 AM
I am underweight and have a small bone structure.

I wanted to know how much Vit D i need to take?

I take a supplement Shellcal M (1 daily) which says:

Elemental Calcium 500 mg
Vit D3  IP   250  IU

Another Vit D supplement is available in a granular form,

Calcirol 1 gm satchets,

contains Cholecalciferol  IP  60,000   IU.

What would be the proper dosage?

Thanks :-)

Vitamin D is essentail for Bones. The best calcium that is decided by the group is Osteocare from Vitabiotics and it has 200IU of vitamin D. However, Osteocare has more essential minerals to strnegthen the bones. The formula is in the link below.

Dr Vichinsky said they had to go to doses of 50,000 IU weekly before they saw much upward movement in those with low D levels. I am currently taking at least that much. For an eye opening report about vitamin D levels in India, where there is plenty of sunshine, see http://www.japi.org/january_2009/R-1.html

Vitamin D deficiency is epidemic in India despite of plenty of sunshine.

60,000 IU is safe to take.

As scientists have learned more about the role of vitamin D in our bodies, the need for vitamin D supplements in most people has become evident. D plays a major role in bone growth and also in the immune system. In truth, it is not even a vitamin. It is a hormone that is needed for fixing over 40 different nutrients in our bodies. And since humans are no longer hunting and gathering all day long and exposed to day long sunlight, most humans end up deficient. It's a simple concept that we have long ignored.

Thanks,

Personally, I have to avoid the sun completely since it triggers migraines, dehydration and a lot of other issues too. We do get a lot of sun here, but many people cant really take it. :-)

I will try 60,000 IU per week, and see if there's a noticeable difference.

I started with 50,000 units of D for one month and now take a maintenance dose of 5000 units per day. If I don't take it I get shooting pains in my joints. Don't know if it's age related or thal minor related. I'm 46 years old.
