Hello everyone! I am so glad to have found this forum! My name is Crystal and I live in Texas. My son was diagnosed with Thalassemia Minor a month ago (he is 18 months). I joined this forum in hope of finding more info about Thalassemia Minor and also hoping to form friendships. Does anyone know how I go about getting tested to see if I have it? I've always been told that I am anemic and now that my son has Thalassemia Minor I want to get tested to see if I have it as well. Is testing expensive? Sorry, if this isn't the right place to ask. I've posted in other forums (not related to Thalassemia) and they have no idea.

Hi ixadorexpink and welcome,
A simple blood test called a hemoglobin electrophoresis, should be able to determine your status. One of the two parents is a carrier and with your history, it is likely you, but this can easily be verified and is important to do, because you should not take iron to correct the anemia if it is related to being thal minor and not a result iof an actual iron deficiency. Iron can cause problems when taken long term, so it is best avoided unless it has been determined through a panel of tests called iron studies. The test should be covered by insurance and should not be expensive.
