Title: can taking iron all the time cause other symptoms

i have been taking iron pills for three years now and it seems that i felt good at first but now i am still tired all the time and i have developed other symptoms ......does anyone know if you can get other symptoms from taking to much iron....and one other thing i  think this is gross ...but i can usually tell if my iron is low by the color of my bowel moments.......and if i dont take the iron one day ....it is bad already....please advise...

Hi jodimarierita,

Yes, iron can cause serious problems when taken long term, if not needed. I would suggest having a group of blood tests called an iron panel done, to make sure you really need iron. No one should be on long term iron supplements without having these tests done, and if iron deficiency is found, then the tests should be repeated periodically until the condition is corrected and the iron is discontinued. If the tests do show that you are still deficient, then another form of iron may be necessary. Also, taking vitamin C with iron aids in absorption.
