CHRISSY,
Most common blood work done is the Hemoglobin Electrophoresis. The Fetal Hemoglobin as well as the adult Hemoglobin level is found out from it. But, for your daughter, it seems at this age, she might NOT have much Adult Hemoglobin and lot of Fetal Hemoglobin.
I would also ask you to call the doctor's office and ask them to send a copy to you so that you can have the blood work reports with you when you have questions.

Hi Christine
You know my heart goes out to you with all this mess that is going on with your doctor. I think I would of gone down the doctors throat by now if he/she was messing with my childs prognosis.
I have tired to look some information up for you but I can't locate anything specific to thal. (perhaps my searching skills are not up to scratch)
What I did want to mention is that I can't understand how the doctor as said to you that your daughter aged 10 days could be a thal major when, when children are born their fetal hemoglobin swithes over anywhere between 3 - 6 months of age.
Please keep us posted ....Miaki

well ....also regard my son when he was 15 days old the Dr.take a sampile of blood from him and send it to LONDON to our Dr.there Dr.Mary petrou because she had our blood sampile and she knew our gain number me and my wife... after one week she sent a fax telling us that my boy is thalassimia major homozigoes (sorry for the spiling) ...
normally the Dr when he ask for blood HB profile normaly he got a blood sample from the father and the mother and he know what gain he look for it and what ever the child have this gain who make thalassimia or not ...
if the gain same thing from the parents come to the child that main it's thalassima homozigoes major that main no adult HB in the futer just feuteuse HB availble may be he will be thalassimia intermidia because the feuteus HB is working probably in the body ...
GOD BLESS ALL

Hi Chrissy,
I do not whether it matters now or not, but the following may provide some insight into what constitutes a Hemoglobin Profile that Lauryn's doctor was referring to. The section of interest is the tests that comprise the test.
The source of this information is: http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/labtests/clinical/c/coox.cfm
