Title: how many tranfusion to chelation treatment?
Post by: leonardo on November 04, 2011, 01:56:54 PM
My son Leonardo has done 2° tranfusion after 1.5 months from the first.
Then he'll do about 8 trasfusion / year.
He'll do chelation treatment?

Chelation usually starts after about 10 transfusions, although this varies with different treatment centers.

Andy, does this mean that chelation treatment will start after about 10 transfusions or if transfusions are over 10 per year? Thanks!

After 10 or more transfusions total. Formerly, this was set as high as after 20 transfusions, but it makes little sense to allow the uiron to build up that much before starting chelation.

Hello,
Our 4 year old Thal Intermedia girl had her first transfusion in June 2010 and started chelation in May 2011 when her ferritin was approx. 550. She gets transfusion every 7th week when her hb is approx 9 - 9,5. The chelation works fine and we have seen no side effects yet. Good luck!

My son Jovy get his tranfusion on his 13 tx. Good to start it early- but really hard to handle it while he's asleep.. I'm also can't sleep, have to checked the needle still at the right place evytime. so get ready, 1st month is verrry-very stressful! :biggrin
