Title: Hydroxyurea Treatment for Major
Post by: thalindia2011 on January 08, 2012, 06:28:06 PM
Hi Andy,
My daugher is 3 years old with thalseemia major . She is having 619 BP deletion and Capsite +(A-C) with polymorphism -/-. Our doctor suggested that since due to polymorphism hydroxyurea cannot be given or will be ineffective .

Since what i have read is if at least one mutation is mild like cap site then hyroxyurea can be tried .

Pls suggest .

regards
MA

The polymorphism should not negatively affect the value of hydroxyurea but the 619 BP deletion is one that normally results in low levels of HbF, so hydroxyurea may not be very effective.
