Title: Itchy and swelling of lips or face
Post by: Canadian_Family on January 20, 2012, 02:02:09 PM
Hi all,

Little Miss A is having an itchy skin and swelling of lips and or face this morning. Please note the transfusion was done 7 days ago and the doctors had to stop the transfusion in between due to the same reaction. The transfusion was never resumed and she was given two doses of benadryl, observed for few hours and let go. After seven days it started again, we are waiting the call from the nurse to advise us. However, we are not sure what can cause this.

Please note she is not on chel;ation right now, so I don't suspect it to be a reaction from Exjade.

Please reply

Regards,

It may be a delayed transfusion reaction to either red blood cells or some stray platelets that got through the filter. If platelets are involved, tiny red bumps will usually appear. In either case, it is usually a temporary reaction that clears up quickly, lasting no more than two weeks.

Hi Zaini,

Thanks for your concern. She is still on benadryl, I can see some redness on her face. Otherwise she is just fine.

Since I have been out of touch, how is your daughter doing.

HI
Its funny, even my daughter have been having swell in her upper lip. she is up to date with her blood. It does not itch for her, its only in the morning. I wonder if any one would know whats causing it. Good luck with your daughter.

Canadian Family,

I did not see this post earlier.  I hope this issue resolved quickly.  Is Miss A chelating now?

Alia,

my son would also get a swollen lip when he was around 8 years old - it turns out he was putting on lip balm which he was allergic to which was causing his lip to swell up.

Always let your pediatrician know that this is going on,

Let us know how things are going,

Sharmin

Dear All,

I also experience this swelling, itching and small red dots. Usually it happens when blood flow is increased to the area. for example if i would hold glass of water by mouth and suck air from it, all my lips will become like baboons  :rotfl and itching/red rashes will encircle lips. Similarly if I lay on stomach with pillow pressing may face directly to the bed, my face will swell like you people mentioned. Its not that frequent and to me is not that serious/painful either.

I read it somewhere that it is because of plasma reaction.

How long after transfusion does that happen?
