Title: Inheritability of thalassemia gene when marrying non-carrier
Post by: sepsis74 on January 22, 2012, 06:28:25 AM
I know the odds of passing on the thalassemia gene is only 50% when someone who only carries the recessive gene marries someone who does not have the gene at all.   But I have noticed that many posts by people who have thalassemia indicate that 2 or 3 of their children have the trait, too.  Are there people in Thal Minor plus non-carrier marriages who have kids who are completely free of the gene?  Maybe people just don't mention that, but I am curious why I have never heard of the gene skipping anyone.

Yes, the chances of having both genes free of thalassemia in such cases are 50%. I know of many such cases. I think such cases are just not talked about.
