Title: Tattoos after splenectomy, thoughts?
Post by: CUSO on February 20, 2013, 12:33:57 AM
Just asked my surgeon, he said I would need to take penacillin and be very sure the place is clean. He said it would be best to just avoid. I wanna still live life, and for me tattoos were a part of my life.

Have you ever had an infection after a tattoo? Is your tattoo artist completely professional? If there is even a remote chance of infection, tattoos will be a risk. If there is no chance of infection, I would say give your body some time to heal before considering it. Are you taking anything after the surgery? The Standards of Care Guidelines for Thalassemia, give these guidelines for post splenectomy.

After splenectomy, patients should receive oral penicillin
prophylaxis (250 mg twice daily) and be instructed to seek urgent
medical attention for a fever over 101ยบ Fahrenheit.

The pneumovax vaccine is also required.

My surgeon feels that I am a very low risk for problems and has not recommended any penicillin. I am taking no meds at all. I do take vitamin C, but that is it. He simply said when I go to the dentist, that i need a course of penicillin. I want to build a healthy immune system from the ground up. I am getting meningitis vaccine and hib vaccine tomorrow. I got the pneumonia vaccine prior to surgery.
