Title: Desperate search for Ferriprox/Deferiprone/Kelfer
Post by: sophiag on May 23, 2013, 07:50:08 PM
I am a Thal Major patient in Canada and I am in desperate search for Ferriprox/Kelfer/Deferiprone to treat my iron overload. I am looking to purchase this medication. I am having on going battles with the hospitals here in Canada and I am at a point where I need to take care of this on my own for my own well being.

If someone from another country can help me, please send me a message. Thank you!

Has Ferriprox been approved in Canada? It was only approved in the US recently.

No it's not approved in Canada at this time and this mainly has to do with politics and a Dr. Nancy Oliveri in Toronto Ontario who pulled the plugged on this back in the 90's. Our only chelation therapy right now is Exjade and Desferal. We can obtain Ferriprox through Special Access Program within Health Canada & Apotex but this is proving to be a challenge in the province of Alberta because doctors here are finding the process to be too lengthy, therefore sitting on this for months in hopes patients give up on it and move forward with other options. Right now I am in a battle with my hospital and doctor and I am seekng outside help with this while I continue to fight this.

Sophia,

I live in Alberta as well.  I know at least one other patient here who is taking Ferriprox and it has been very effective for him.  My 14 year old son is on exjade and has been maintaining ferritin levels between 300 to 500 - for us exjade has been very effective.

PM me - maybe I can help.

Sharmin
