My daughter, Karuna, 18 years of age, is suffering from Thalassemia Major . Recently we got her MRI done and the results show severe accumulation ( 320) of Iron in liver. She was on Kelfer & Desferal combined therapy. Now, doctor has prescribed Asunra - 4 tablets of 400 mg per day. Her serum ferritin is 3300 and her weight is 52 kgs.
Kindly advise, whether to stay with Combined therapy or shift to Asunra???

What dose was she taking of kelfer daily and how often was she taking desferal and in what quantity? How long has she been taking her current doses?

She is taking 9 capsules of Kelfer 500 mg daily. She is not very comfortable in taking desferal. On an average she is taking 3 vials at a time twice a week. She is taking kelfer since she was 5 years of age. However the initial dosages were less but we have been maintaining 75 mg per kg body weight. She started taking Desferal from August 2001. Initially used to take one vial per day, ( 2-3 times a week)shifted to 2 vials in 2007 and taking 3 vials since last 2 years.

Her T2* is fantastic! I would not shift away from Kelfer with it doing such an excellent job in her heart. Desferal works well at removing liver iron. Is the doctor OK with tkaing Kelfer and Asunra together? There have been only small trials so far, but it has worked well. If this is not an option, my advice would be to continue with desferal in addition to Kelfer. I would also remind you that drinking tea does have a small chelation benefit and can help with the liver.

This is an excellent result... Again Kelfer is proved to be 'Cardio Protective'

Since she is not very comfortable taking desferal, What is your advise on taking Kelfer with Asunara.

There have only been very small trials on combining Kelfer and Asunra, so I can't say much about the safety of the combination, other than these trials have not shown any problems. If this is attempted. I think weekly testing for white cell count, liver function tests and serum creatinine should be done for the first two months to make sure no problem is developing.

my son is taking 8 capsules of kelfer everyday divided into 4 doses of 2 capsules each. Now is ferrting is 2934 so we have to increase capsules to 9 per day. can somebody advice me that he can take 3 capsules of 500 mg at a time.
