Title: Thal intermedia and immune system
Post by: BabyRiya on May 08, 2016, 07:43:06 PM
Does immune system get affected because of Thal intermedia?  My one year of keeps getting head cold quite often.  I am confused if they are related or because of day care germs.

Also I have a general lifestyle question.   Those parents with little child with Thal, how it impacts day day day life.  Do one parent have to quit and stay at home, what are the things to look out for?

If fetal hemoglobin is 60% and adult hemoglobin is 30% is there a chance while the baby grows older, the Hbf would decrease and hba would increase?
Is there any statistics on how freequently Thal beta intermediate gets transfused.  There is no hbE.
Is there any Thal beta intermediate subgroup that I can chat

Yes, thal intermedia can affect the immune system. Vitamin D can help keep the immune system stronger.

How old is the child?

Thanks Andy. My daughter is just 14 months old. We came to know about this during annual screening.  After two Cbc tests with hemo at 7 level and mcv in 57 range they suspected for Thal and requested for electrophoresis.  Genotype sequence test is pending and one day it dropped to 6.5 and we did a first transfusion.  They think it's Thal intermedia but still waiting for the sequence test results.
Ferritin Is in 300 range.  Retic count around 4 %

Baby has not shown any symptoms.  She goes to day care so sometimes I get confused if she is getting sick because of germs from outside or because of Thal.  Doctor says immune should not get affected and her wbc reacts fine.

We are giving just folic acids.
Couple of questions
Do I have to keep my child at home and not send to day care anymore so that her immune and hemo does not get variations?
If fetal count is 60 and adult in mi d 30s by year one, could it change to normal adult hemo down the lane as she grows older?
Thank you for your great contributions!
