Title: Sudden increase in Sr Ferritin
Post by: NK on June 17, 2016, 01:03:29 PM
My son is 9.5 years old. Till last year, his Ferritin level always remained less than 1000. In Jan'16, it was 1638. In 6 months time, it has jumped to 3700. Desirox  (500 mg) is continued. There may be occasional misses. I am very worried. Please suggest something.

I'm guessing his dose of desirox is now too low. What is his weight?

Hi Andy,
His weight is 26 Kg. We met the treating doctor and doctor confirmed that my son's spleen is almost normal in size. Doc has suggested to give 1000 mg for next 3 months and re-check the Ferritin level.

His dose should be about 750 mg daily. It's weight based. 30 mg/kg is the standard dose.

Pls check Sr. Ferrtin when there is no fever or thorat pain or thorat infection. .
Also check HCV status which may be reason to increase ferrtin.
Thanks

Hi,
Put ur son on split dosage of desirox half in the morning and half in the eve.
Ferritin always stays stable on a level for long time (but it do not indicate iron level) then it goes up. Then again stays stable on a certain level and increase (If it is having increasing trend) and vice versa.

After reaching 10 ur son can go for T2*MRI for cardiac and liver iron overload assessement.

PS Pancreas iron assessement has been added at mumbai center in India.
