Post by: Baby_boy on April 14, 2017, 04:53:54 PM
Good day Andy,

I would like to know if:

Beta Thalassemia is life threatening or not? And the justification for your response.

Thank you.

Thal major is a fatal condition that has become a chronic condition that is not fatal when proper treatment is taken. So, yes it is life threatening but with modern treatment, thals can live fairly normal lives. Unfortunately, good treatment is not available in many countries and even in countries with good treatment, patients can suffer if they're not in a good program under knowledgeable medical professionals.

Understood.
Thank you for your response.
Unfortunately my country does not have a proper programme. Both pediatrics and adults are still receiving leukocyte poor as opposed to leukocyte deleted blood. The doctors don't even know or want to admit it. Chelation is even worse because on numerous occasions the pharmacy at the hospital do not get a constant supply of exjade. It is very sad....

Regards.
