Thanks to Andy for accepting me to this wonderful site.
My son is 5 yrs old and recently diagnosed with B  thal trait..
We came to know that he was having this disorder after the ultra sound results came out with enlarged spleen size 16 cm and enlarged liver 13cm. He was admitted in hospital for 3 days with every possible findings the reason behind his enlarged spleen. It was came out with all negative results except B Thal trait.
RBC 3.6
HGB 8.79
WBC 9.36
PALATELETS 154 at lower side.
I have changed his complete diet from processed to natural from orange juice to apple and follwed by papaya, mango, dates and spanich during dinner time.
Im looking for a new jersey tea in jeddah saudi arabai.. if anybody could help me to find out.
Kindly suggest me how to help in getting back his spleen to normal size.
Thank You.
God bless.

Hi Saeed and welcome to the site

New jersey tea is also called red root. I once ordered it from the Internet. So you can search online for a good brand that can be shipped to jeddah.
Is your son thal intermedia  or a minor?

Thank You So Much Manal.

Although i am shock and new to this finding, but i guess from multiple readings that Trait is also known as minor. as i need to confirm from my Hematologist ( New Jeddah Clinic Hospital ).

Ya, i search online and found Ubuy.com which selling Red Root (Health & Herbs ) importing from USA around 300 SR.
can we find in herbs form in jeddah those who are selling herbal medicines?
Do you use drops or dried tea and if so what is the procedure?
Does this tea helps in improving overall Spleen condition?
my Son is on 90% natural diet especially my concentrations is more on Papaya and mango as its helps in enlarged spleen so to orange and apple juice all these natural beauties having lots of folic acid and vitamin E & C.
Thank You.

You are welcome

Actually I used the drops and followed what was written on bottle.
To confirm if it reduces the spleen or not, actually this is what it is known for but you will have to try it and if it didn't work, it won't be of any harm
Please update us

Did you do blood electrophoresis for your son ?

When you used this tea did you find any improvement in spleen size?
Yes we did electrophoresis  with following outcome :
HbA   95.4%
HbA2   3.8%
HbF     <0.8%
Findings : Hgb electrophoresis patter is indicative of heterozygous B thalassemia  * B thal trait)
Is it possible with nautral n herbs diet to shrink the spleen size back to normal.
Do you think 16 cm very big size for 5 yr old?.

Iron test revealed :
Irons 10 ug/dl    limit 50 - 120 ug/ld
Iron binding capacity 249 Ug/ld  limit 100- 410 ug/ld
Does giving natural food with iron helps his iron defecency?
Manal we are very much concern as this is the only son we have and our hematologist seems takes every thing easy with only monthly follow up with CBC test or might ask for ultra sound.
When i asked him any specefic diet or supplements he just ignored and told me let you son eat what he likes as earlier.
Although i change his complete diet.
Looking for every possible help from anywhere which can improved his overall health.
Thank You.
May Allah always shower his blessings on you and your family. Ameen.

Try the red root. It has a good reputation. I have been told that muskmelon juice will also help reduce spleen size.

I would also recommend that you consider DNA testing to confirm what type of thal is present. The numbers you show do not necessarily indicate beta thal. The spleen size does, though.

It's questionable if the iron is really low, as the TIBC does not show the body trying to absorb extra iron. Diet that includes iron rich foods are recommended, but iron supplements should not be taken unless the child's iron is quite low, as iron supplements often interfere with digestion, making it difficult to eat enough nutritious foods. The foods you mentioned in another post are very good.

Thank You Very Much Andy for your precious time in replying me.

You mean to say it can be Thal major too ?

well, if you could tell me what kind of DNA test required to diagnosed the Thal type so that i can suggest my hematologist to go for it.

The one i ordered from USA is New Jersey tea ( Ceanothus americanus ) will reach me within a week, it comes in 250 ml as i posted the pic above.. but don't know the dosage and how to use them, if you have any idea how to use kindly suggest me.

As far as spleen size is concern do you think it is possible to shrink back to its normal size with natural diet?

Thank You.
God Bless.

No, it wouldn't be thal major. The HbA2 isn't high and is almost always high in beta minor. The RBC is usually slightly high or at the high end of normal, and 3.6 is not high. Do you have the values for MCV and MCH?
Title: Re: B Thal trait

Ty Andy,
MCV 79         fL   75-87
MCH 24.4     pg  24- 30.
E.S.R(B) 72   mms/hr up to 10
Does enlarged spleen always react resperatory infections lik cough n chest fulness as my son always getting bck cough wvery month.

Does any thal gets their skin pale especially face n palms?
Is it due to low hgb n rcb or due to liver abnormal function.
My son apart from enlarged spleen also diagnosed with enlarged liver 13 cm.
Any body any clue ?
TY.

The MCV and MCH are both slightly low, so it could be thal minor. The ESR is very high. Have you been given any explanation for that? I think DNA testing should be done to find out if it's alpha or beta thal and if it's beta trait, what is the mutation? The spleen and liver are both enlarged, due to hemolysis, but why beyond what is normally seen with thal trait? Is this totally due to thal or is something else involved? DNA testing will help answer this.
The pale skin is due to less oxygen reaching the extremities. I would suggest natural vitamin E, 100-200 IU daily, as this helps the ciruclation. Exercise will also help, but the problem is that the irregular shaped red blood cells do not pass through the smallest blood vessels easily.

Ty Andy,
Our Hematologist is not giving any explanation what so ever, although i told him about what would be next step, he just told me  to visit him again after 1 month with  complete CBC which will be on 07/06/2017.
So we are seeking gastroenterologist that will be next appointment.
Well sure i will ask him about this contradiction and ask for DNA test too.
for vitamin E i am giving him almond 2 teaspoon powder mix with honey, Spinach and papaya.
any safe vitamin E supplement?
Is enlarged liver and spleen also caused or present at birth?
How to treat irregular shaped red blood cells?
Thanks.

Look for vitamin E that says d-alpha tocopherol, not dl-alpha.
The spleen and liver enlarge because there is a high turnover of red blood cells, RBC's. The defective RBC's produced because of the defective beta globin genes are filtered out by these organs, causing them to enlarge. RBC's are even manufactured in these organs, causing further enlargement.
The best thing you can do is provide the proper nutrients to help build RBC's, but even with this, defective RBC's will still be produced.

Thank You Andy,

Is there any way to flush out the defective RBC's from spleen and liver ?
This will be a problem if spleen and liver size further increases.

I have been told that juice from muskmelon can help decrease spleen size. Providing the nutrients to build RBC's also helps.

Dear Andy,

The latest CBC and other test ruled out B Thal trait. As per the Hematologist my son is not the carrier of B Thal
He is having Hereditary Ovalocytosis.

Blood Film for Morphology : Hereditary Ovalocytosis

Hemoglobin Electrophor
HbA   = 95.8%
HbA2 = 3.4%
HbF   = <0.8%

Comment :- Normal Hemoglobin electrophoretic pattern.

G.6.P.D  Quantitative Estimatn  39 U/g Hb    Normal Range 6.6-17.2 U/g Hb

WBC 14.3
RBC  3.45
HGB  8.7
MCV 78.6
MCH 25.3
Platelets 213

Ferritin          43.72  Normal Range 30-400 ng/ml
Folic Acid      10.6    Normal Range  7.20-15.40 ng/ml
Vitamin B12   353    Normal Range 240-900 pg/ml

Recticulocyte Count  5.39  Normal Range 0.5-2.5

Dr comments :
No Treatment required for enlarged Spleen as it does not poses any danger for the time being and not to think of removing until if it poses any danger to child health. as present spleen working normally except low HGB and Spleen needed for child well being..
Blood transfusion requires if HGB drops below 8.0.

Folic acid supplements prescribed for 40 days.

Thank your Andy.

I'm not surprised it isn't thal minor, as the test results did not support that very well.

Juice of muskmelon may still help to keep the spleen size down.

Th Andy.
I just received the red root extract known as new jersey tea..
But my hematologist not allowing me for my son he is simply saying don't use. I'm don't know why they don't accept any herbal supplements.
Do you think I can give to my 5 yr son without any unwanted side effects.. as I only concern about his spleen size.

Red root is known to be safe. I would suggest that if you try it, start with a very low dose, no more than 1/4 of what an adult would take.
