Hi Harsimran,

The only side effect milk thistle has is that it can act as a MILD laxative when taken in very high doses. It is a very safe herb to use.

Hi,
I take milk thistle everyday. I feel it definitely helps me with the chronic constipation I have had all my life, and I think it makes me feel better by eliminating toxins. This is just my opinion - I don't have any scientific info. Good luck, Jean

I also take milk thistle daily. It is a good blood purifier and useful for many conditions. Since iron is constipating, a gentle laxative effect is most welcome for thals. I also know at least two other members of our group who have regularly taken milk thistle to help battle hepatitis. Both have said that it has made a positive effect and improved their LFT's (liver function tests). One of them has taken huge doses of milk thistle with no side effects. Almost any article you can find about treating hepatitis naturally will mention milk thistle.

Milk thistle typically comes in 1000 mg capsules. It's a very mild herb. It is suggested one or two capsules daily. If used for hepatitis, 2-4 capsules daily.

Andy I couldn't find any milk thistle with that high silymarin content in pharmacies here. I have GNC capsules standardized 200mg of silybum, 160mg of silymarin. I want to take high doses that people with HCV take, even though my HCV is inactive. How high I can aim for?

Waleed,

That is actually a good dose. Take 1-4 capsules daily. I would suggest that you eventually get treated with Harvoni or Sovaldi, both of which are becoming available as generic meds at low prices in Asia.

Doctors keep telling me that I do not need any treatment since my PCR is negative. Sovaldi have made its entrance in Pakistan and I can buy it from there without prescription if I have to. Can you direct me to good sources where I can read more about patients with negative PCR getting on treatment.

Waleed,

Did you ever have an active HCV infection or a positive pcr test? Or, is this based on the presence of antibodies only?

Andy,

The PCR was always negative since the day it was discovered that antibodies are positive, I was 14yo then. I never had been on treatment as LFTs used to be normal.

This article suggests that Milk thistle silymarin together with deferiprone chelates more iron than deferiprone alone.

Bilirubin is raised by hemolysis and break down or RBCs. Here Natural E and others do the same thing prevent early breakdown of RBCs means we can use Nat E for the same purpose?

Please give view on this Andy and other thalpals who uses these supplements and have views and anything about they can share

Milkthistle with Dandelion extract is also recommended for liver health.
