Gene therapy trials for thalassemia have now been approved in the US and it is hoped that two trials will begin by the middle of 2008, provided that the necessary funding can be arranged.

We have had some recent posts on this topic at

My opinion is that gene therapy presents the best possibility for a safe cure for thalassemia but it will take years of trials before it can be made available for patients.
