Title: too good to be true
Post by: vic on December 17, 2007, 11:39:27 PM
i know i shouldn't be skeptical - in fact i should be jumping up and down with joy.  here are christian's ferritin results: ( only been chelating with desferal since april 2007)
July 07 - ferritin 1800
30-7-07            2083
3-9-07              1887
2-10-07            1990
5-11-07            1909
10-12-07          1100

do you agree that the last entry seems a bit odd.  dont get me wrong.  i love the numbers but is it too good to be true?  can there be such dramatic drops in ferrting levels in the course of a month.  we do 5 nights a week and are very compliant.

Yes, it can drop like that especially once the iron in the bloodstream is under control. This happens as the iron in the tissue is slowly diminished by the desferal. What this really shows is that the iron in Christian's organs and tissue was never given the opportunity to build up to dangerous levels and that the desferal is working quite well to remove it. I think you will see the ferritin levels stabilize and possibly drop a bit lower. If they drop much below 1000, the doctor may suggest lowering his desferal intake slightly, as desferal can cause problems if there isn't enough iron to chelate. At some point he will also undergo other testing (MRI or Ferriscan) to check iron levels in his liver. This will give a far more accurate reading of his iron stores and how well the chelation is working.

Hi Vic,
I'm so proud of you and your little soldier!

:wootwoot

I have a little miracle of my own to share. Well, I've been having some G.I infections lately and my Hb dropped to 5.5 I got three transfusions in a week with a last transfusion on 9.1. I was due a transfusion on 15th Dec but couldn't get it due to availability issues. I was really worried and now after 3 more days got a bag only to find out that my Hb is 11.8!!! I was amazed and my doctor was really happy and postponed my transfusion to 10 more days!! This is the first time I had more than twice as much gap between transfusions! 21 days beats the usual 10 days anytime!!! :happydance

:yahooYehey! that's really good news Sajid!!!!!! hope it goes through and through just like me and my sis! Keep up the good work! My sis and I have not been transfused for 5 years, well until recently when my hgb fell to 5.5 because of infection. Best hope that i could maintain it again, crossed your fingers for me! :grin

Thanks everyone!

Five days after the 11.8 Hb (Which is the halfway through the tank :biggrin ) I was still feeling charged up on the Eid day even though it was a pretty eventful day and had to do quite more running around than usual and in the end was deliciously rewarded :food

Hi Lyanne,

Thank you.

I'm sorry to hear about your Hb being so low. These infections take a great toll on the Hb. Can you tell us what happened and since you are not on transfusions then how will you cope with such low Hb? I recommend you get a transfusion just enough to help you recover faster.

I wish you all the best of health and happiness in this holiday season.

Praying for everyone :pray
