Title: Hypo thyroid gland
Post by: Manal on February 14, 2008, 12:32:11 AM
Hi

As we all know thal minors have high tendency to have hypothyrodism ( it is not a must but just a tendency). I was wondering if there are anything that can prevent this like certain food, vitamins, suplements........ or any of this sort? For me as i am a thal minor, i do thyroid function every four months so that i can moniter any change as i have three in my family ( cousins ) who developed hypo thyroid gland. So is monitering is enough or there is anything else i can do?

Hi Manal,

Thyroid disorders are genetic and there isn't much one can do to prevent or improve it. However, a lack of iodine in the soil has resulted in an increase of thyroid disorders. This is why salt is often iodized. A good cheap supplement for iodine is kelp tablets or seaweed, if you prefer. In marginal cases it may be of some value to take an iodine supplement.
