Title: I need help: part 2
Post by: chuck on May 08, 2006, 12:21:39 AM
Ok,,, since my last 2 posts, I have had to get very proactive in my own healthcare, I at first suspected I had b12 or folic acid deficiency, but after some more bloodwork, and my insistance that they tell me what each test meant in relation to my symptoms they think they found my problem. Originally i had gone to the doctor a few times starting in september 2005, they told me i had a sinus drip causing my sore throat,,, gave me antibiotics and a nasal spray and sent me on my way,,,, well after my forth visit and having symptoms of light headedness, exaustion, and a flu like feeling , they once again tried the allergy aproach , only after I stopped the doctor in mid sentence and give him a bunch of crap about how I was tired of this and I felt as though I was being hurried out did he  look closer at my blood work,,, he noticed that my thyroid level, while within the range of  .20- 4.20 (normal on this labs test sheet) mine was at 4.17,,,, he kinda took a different tone after that, and felt my throat ,, and it hurt,,, a ultrasound confirmed my thyroid is swelled,,, so they did more extensive tests,,, t3 t4 and anti body to thyroid,,,, as well as another tsh test,,, I also began testing my temperature as I know a low body temp is also a indicator of  low thyroid, mine is between 95.7 and 97.8,,,,but mostly 97 ..I guess what I would like to know is is there a link to me being thal minor and thyroid trouble? or is there a study of the link between them. I get the feeling I am sensitive to any slight changes in my body chemistry and just because my thyroid numbers are in the normal range for the general population,it may be different for people with thallassemia. Meanwhile the doctor has me on high doses of advil to reduce inflamation , and it seems to have reduced my lightheadedness, I made a appointment to see a specialist(2 month wait) a endochrinologist, and I am told a biopsy is next. I feel a little better they are on the right track , but only because i had to push to get this far.

i have many of the same symptoms you have described. My blood work showed an increased T3Res Update (38). This lead to further tests- T4T and T3F-but their results came up in reference range. Please let me know if you find out anything else regarding this matter.

Hi,
It's remarkable that I was just tested today for the very same thing as you were.  I have had extreme fatigue, light headedness, and have felt like I have the flu.  My doctor ordered thyroid tests today.  I had them checked 7 months ago and they were within the limits, but he wanted to check them again.  I think I have read that people with Thal sometimes do have thyroid problems. I'm not sure, but I think it is due to high iron levels in some Thals. Do you know what your ferritin level is?  Hang in there - hope you get some help soon.  Jean

I was diagnosed when I was 17.  No one in my family has been diagnosed, just me....anyway...I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis in 1991, then they found a cancer nodule and I had my thyroid removed in 1991 as well.  I agree, I think people with Thal Minor have thyroid problems.  I was experiencing the same symptoms as you and I had many doctors tell me NO, there are NO symptoms to Thal Minor -- it's all in your head.....I really can't stand doctors....

Anyway - thought I'd let you know.  Diana

Hello,
My thyroid test came back within the normal range, but I do recall that my nephew who has thal minor has to take thyroid medication for an underactive thyroid.  Good luck, Jean

Hello to all

I myself suffer from thyroid problems (underactive thyroid), for many years my doctor was trying to treat me but to no success. After some searching I came across a great support group called Thryoid Australia . Perhaps you can try their website for some answers or drop them a email and know they would be more than happy to help out.

website for thyroid australia is www.thyroid.org.au

All the best ...Miaki
