Title: difficult to handle
Post by: surendra on May 15, 2012, 11:09:15 AM
my daughter is 27 months old thal major. Now It is going to be very difficult for us to take her  for transfusion. She starts crying as we reach to the hospital and don't want to go in.
She is not in the age of understanding. I always say to her that doctor will not prick her and he is a good guy but at the time of pricking and transfusion she become restless and obstinate.
What should I do as she is too young to tell her anything about thalasseamia???

It is the hardest thing us parents with thalassemia children have to do but it is for the best. I think because she is young she willl not know anything else and get used to it. It gets easier each time so please just try and relax. You are doing the right thing.

Hi Surendra
Each and every parent here has been through that process. What we did at that age was to be really excited ourselves the whole week prior transfusion , treat it like a family outing. We used to talk on what we would do once discharged from hospital. Include the child in the discussion as to where he would like to go etc..etc...We never talked about the pricking apart, I never told him not to cry while pricking...nothing. We would carry a few tit bits he liked to eat, a few of his favourite toys.
Never lie to the child that she will not be pricked. At that age my son had to get a minimum of three pricks before they could find a vein. Once outside the treatment room he would still be crying , complaining the doc is bad etc.. etc.. and we would just agree with him, allow him to get it out of his system and in minutes he would be back to his normal self.
He is 6 years now and he still cries at times when finding the vein becomes difficult, but he actually enjoys going to hospital.

Thanks to both of u for your advice.
Actually we tell her that doctor will only pinch her and she'll be o.k. But this time it was very difficult to find her vein and she had been pricked four times. After this she got feared. I hope she will understand soon and get used of this.

This is painful time for the parents. I also have followed the advice given here. It really works...
