Hello all,
I am not yet certain I have Thalassemia, but my sister does and she knows for sure as does her daughter. I think my parents do, they don't know certainly.
I have my hemoglobin electrophoresis and iron panel test at the lab now won't see results until Tuesday.
But here are my numbers if anyone wants to try to guess. I got these last week.
WBC = 4.0 = OK
RBC = 5.91 = HIGH
HEMOGLOBIN = 11.3 = LOW
HEMATOCRIT = 36.7 = LOW
MCV = 62 = LOW
MCH = 19.1 = LOW
MCHC = 30.8 = LOW
RDW = 19.4 = HIGH
PLATELETS = 245 = OK
FERRITIN SERRUM = 12 LOW
Do you think this looks like Thalassemia minor / iron deficiency anemia or both.
Well, anyway, this looks like a great board, if I have Thal, I am sure I will be visiting more. I will follow up when I get my results Tuesday.
Funny I always thought I was very healthy, I work our regularly, I am a whole foods vegan, but still, very low ferritin. It must be life long, with it this low(haven't had blood read for years, not a big fan of Doctors) so, time to see where to go from here. To see if iron supplementation is in my future or not
Thanks!,
Matthew

Looks like thal minor.
These could be seen with thal minor or iron deficiency, IDA
HEMOGLOBIN = 11.3 = LOW
HEMATOCRIT = 36.7 = LOW
MCV = 62 = LOW
MCH = 19.1 = LOW
MCHC = 30.8 = LOW
but your RBC is high RBC = 5.91 = HIGH.
RBC is normally low with IDA.

Thanks Andy for your reply.
I will see what these other tests show also.
It is interesting for sure. It look like a mixture of both some how.
Developing... :)

The results are in.
Hgb Fracture Profile consistent with beta-Thalassemia minor.
My Iron results are in:
TIBC 314
UIBC 51 - LOW
Iron, Serum - HIGH
Iron Saturation - HIGH
___
Oh well, there it is. Still don't know if my Ferritin, Serum of 12 means I have Iron Deficency Anemia, the doctor who is just a GP said don't I do not need to take any Iron. I wonder if a hematologist is the next best step.
Thanks for your help!
