Title: Should we stop Hydroxy Urea?
Post by: anjan_sh on May 03, 2016, 04:02:29 PM
Dear Andy  and others
My  son is on Hydroxy Urea for last three years. But it is not working. Earlier he needed transfusion every two months, now he needs transfusion every month. Should we stop or continue?  Is there any other benefits of HU? please suggests. Thanks and regards...

Anjan, India.

If monthly transfusions are needed after 3 years of use, I don't think it's worth continuing it.

Thank you Andy . His spleen is normal and remains active even when HB is low. Is  it due to Hydroxy Urea? Is there any other benefits of Hydroxy Urea?
Thanks and regards

Do you know if the percentage of HbF has risen while he has been on hydroxyurea? Even when the Hb stays the same, if the HbF rises significantly, it shows that there is a reduction in bone marrow activity as more good fetal hemoglobin is produced, as opposed to the hemoglobin in the defective red blood cells normally produced. This would also reduce the filtering of red cells by the spleen.
