Title: Lauryn's hgb increased
Post by: Christine Mary on December 18, 2006, 09:39:23 PM
Hi to all:

Lauryn had a hemo. appt today and her hemoglobin is 9.4!
It went up .2 in 3 1/2 weeks.
The md says comparing her history to his other patients, she prob. won't need her first transx until shes 8-12 months old.
Her retic count went down also. Whatever that means?
He also said he detects a very faint flow murmur, and we should not be alarmed. He says this is common among thals?
Also, is it true that a heel poke is less acurate than a vein??? I'm asking b/c she usually gets her heel poked, but today she had blood drawn from a vein.... one try! Good to know for the future and transfusions.
Love,
Christine

Hey Christine - that's great news! It's always good when the hemoglobin goes up. I don't know about the heel vs. vein, sorry I can't help. I'm sure someone knows about it. Take care, love, Jean :clap

Hi Christine!

That's a great news! The more delayed the transfusion, the better it is!.

As for the heel vs vein thing; the only thing I can think of is that, it is more convenient for them to get blood from babies. Finding a vein in constantly moving arms/hands of a baby can be more challenging than just grabbing the foot and poke the heel where there is a network of capillaries and require no precision targeting.

This also reminds me that some hospitals here in Pakistan prick the thumb of the hand for the blood tests that require only a few drops of blood. Just like the home glucose test kits used by Diabetic patients.

Take care, Peace!

Christine,

It continues to look good for Lauryn, and it's nice to know you won't be thinking about transfusions over the holidays. It's so good to see that Lauryn has such good parents as her holiday gift.  :wink
