how many days??
« on: November 01, 2007, 09:49:48 AM »
Dear all,

How old is the blood that you get transfused?

I got blood which is 3 days old at most when I lived in Turkey but now I'm in the Netherlands and the bloods are 20 days old at least. I'm really curious about this. Please let me know if it is usual or freak?? Of course the doctors say this is normal, because the important thing is expiration date but in my country our doctors said fresher would be better.

What do you say?

Hi,

You are right. We had a discussion about it here. If the blood is nearing it's end life then it will be less effective.

hi Baris!
it is always good to have a fresh blood, my sister and I always use fresh packed RBC for blood transfusion. It is best to have fresh because it will you have  less reaction and higher compatibility.....that's what our doctors says....
