Hi Zaini
Even if you do manage to donate it would be of no use to the hospital. A low hb , a probably low hct and to top it all  a thal minor.

As far as i remember thal minors can donate blood, but i know low hb would make my blood less useful.

Hi Zaini
Definitely thal minors can donate blood. I was refering to your health after you donated. I have a rare bloodgroup(A -ve ). Every six months voluntary blood camps were organised in our college campus. The needle always frightened me so donating blood was out of question. When my lecturer came to know I had a rare blood group well she managed to show me the way to the camp. After I finished donating  I perhaps managed a few steps and then BANG, I fainted.
Take Care

In the US, you wouldn't be allowed to donate with an Hb that low. This does vary from country to country, but the effect on the donor needs to be considered. These are the US guidelines for donors:

http://www.redcross.org/services/biomed/0,1082,0_557_,00.html

Quote
Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, Blood Count
Acceptable if you have a hemoglobin at or above 12.5 g/dL.
Acceptable if you have a hematocrit at or above 38%.

Most minors would not be able to donate here. Where it is allowed, the donors need to be able to gauge if they can function adequately after donating. If you are weak or disoriented after donating, giving blood may not be possible.

I have donated blood once, and i didn't feel anything at that time, but i was unaware of my thal at that time, anyways now my hubby won't let me donate as he knows about my low hb,and i know it won't be much use anyway,i only wanted to help though.I'd love donating blood for the kids who need it.

Well,

Most centers won't hesitate even if you are minor; here in Pakistan if your Hb is around 12 especially if you have a rare blood group.

Hi Zaini,

Strange as it sounds, but the O group is quite rare here in Rwp. Patients have a hard time getting the O group. Blood banks bleed O group donors first and ask them questions later :crackup

Guidelines for Blood Donors In New England (Boston Area)
« Reply #10 on: November 27, 2007, 05:24:38 PM »
Hello All,

I just talked with the New England Red Cross nurse(Boston area) and after transferring from one representative to another (which is good as they did NOT give an answer to a question they did NOT know about), I was told Thal(Minor) is allowed to donate blood by a nurse. I did ask if it is OK with the MCV value being on the lower side and she looked up in the computer before replying, they do NOT see anything which says Thal(Minor)s cannot donate.

In the US it is based strictly on hematocrit. If your hematocrit is at or above 38% they will allow you to donate.
