Sometimes , God breaks our spirit to save our soul.
Sometimes , He breaks our heart to make us whole.
Sometimes , He sends us pain so we can be stronger.
Sometimes , He sends us failure so we can be humble.
Sometimes , He sends us illness so we can take better care of our selves.
Sometimes , He takes everything away from us so we can learn the value of everything we have.

my son - who will be 10yrs old next month - is 128cm and weighs about 27kg.
Let's see what his adult height will be.

Cheers,

It's well established that thalassemics are generally shorter in stature than non-thals. However, genetics also plays a role so there are thals over 6 feet tall and some are 4' 6". Bigg even posted a link to a study that showed that thal minors are shorter in general than non carriers at
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15507851

Personally, I wish thals wouldn't let themselves get distracted by issues like their height or youthful appearances. These things aren't really important yet I know thals who don't want to live because they are short. My niece is 4' 10". She isn't thal but she is a mom to 2 kids. She doesn't worry about her height. She's got short parents and is genetically short. My mom was 4' 11', but no one back talked her. It isn't your height. It is your heart. What kind of heart do you have? Are you a strong person? Do you have a good heart? Are you confident in yourself? Are you a person who defines yourself or do you let others define you? I know how Smurfette answers these questions and I think every thal should be the same. Be yourself and define yourself. Don't let a silly think like stature affect your life. Napoleon was short and conquered Europe. Go out and conquer your own worlds and never let your height matter.

@ Hi Andy :
thanx for the post , it helped me alot to understanding the picure...
height and other complications doesn't matter in my case...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
@ every visitor
(1) why i posted this question ???..
it doesn't matter that how i m looking and how tall i m ...
it was for the people who didn't know that Iron (which is big complication in thal) could effect the growth of the patient...soo they will strongly determine to, not to stop chelation... thats y i posted that question.. otherwise i m not worried abt my height .... my way of thinking is  " if i cant change my face then i m happy with it and i have the world's beutifull face " it was an example only ... i mean to say that, stay happy thanx to God, that u have 2 hand and 2 eyes bcoze some people even dont have these... plz read my posts to see the Impression of my positive approach, thoughts & thinking,..

special thanks to you andy for understanding me and exlpaining my words to others ...
thank you

I agree totally :biggrin and not just with our heights & weights but our life span.
Drs and text books put a limit on how long we live.... I don't agree.
I believe that I will live a long and fruitful life because thats my goal.
Whether it is short or long... I will make an impact on the people I meet and who know me.
That will be my legacy just like our founder.
Until then I will continue to make my mark in this world and enjoy every second.

Ray ,
you are an inspiration for the thals who think they cant grow tall , soo please do care of your self to impress other thals to take care of their selves and to keep their iron under controle so they can also as tall as you are. .. i  personaly know many thals who think that they cant grow more than 5 feet , but i always say them that if they controle their Fe levels and maintain their Hg above 10 , they can also grow as normal persons ..  soo please doo care of your self for you and for other thals as well ... keep up the good work, keep chelating  and keep fighting against Thalassemia .... Rule the Thalassemia , dont let it to role over you ...

Best Regards

Ray,

Have you ever used desferal? I am curious because desferal is the other reason thals are short. It does slow growth. I have seen some tall thals Like Mike Michael but most are short, although it must be taken into account that many of these people would be short genetically anyway.

Andy,

i remember in one of lectures in Singapore, one of the the doctors (can't recall the name now) said that it was discovered that taking desferal before the age of 2 years cause the bones of the vertabra to flaten anf therefore leading to a short vertabra compared to the limbs whose growth is not affected. From the above we conclude that the measurement of spinal cord is an essential procedure during the administration of desferal

Wow, dude!!! That is seriously tall ..... I do hope u r trying out to be a fast bowler (a la Ishant)!!

I am 5' 10" and weigh 60 kgs and used limited desferal.
My good friend Ashish was 5' 6" and used to weigh more than me - and Ashish was on desferal for a long time - it did not seem to have affected his height, although his mom is much taller. DFO did affect his ears, though.

Cheers
