Sharmin,

Whats the advisable duration of the blood transfusion? I mean the amount of hours for a 250ml packed cell.

My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can.

Sahil,

I am a lot more familiar with children's transfusions, but I can find out for you.  An adult can be transfused faster than a child, especially if you don't have increased hemolysis.

250ml is a very small transfusion - how frequently do you transfuse?  Or do you get multiples of the 250ml packed cell units?  I think that it is better for everyone to get a slower transfusion - as long as you don't hang a bag for more than 4 hours.

I will get back to you on that,

Sharmin

Sharmin,

I transfuse every fortnight, with one packed cell of 250ml. Total amount of blood is 250ml. And the transfusion goes on for about 4 hours.

Hi Sis,
Gap between the transfusions  = 14 days ( exactly 2 weeks)
duration of Transfusion            =  02:45 (2hours 45mnutes) to 03:30 (3hours 30 minutes)
only one unit for one time        =
dont know abt the volume i will ask abt that to Lab incharge of my thal center  ....
i still have to ask to my doctor abt the all other tests  (Coombs test , Hemolysis , Anitbodies and other test you mentioned) ... looking for your reply ....

Umair,

If you are receiving one unit, your transfusion frequency does not sound like a lot.  Unit sizes often vary - here a unit can contain anywhere from 250mL to almost 400mL.  If you receive one unit most likely in 2 weeks your hg will return to your pretransfusion hg.  Therefore, it is best to get one transfusion on a one week interval (at about 100) - and then return to your bi weekly schedule so that your pretransfusion hg remains 95 - 100.  Don't let it drop below that, there will be too much stress on your organs (especially the heart) and your bones.

Let me know when you start on the other tests.

Tariq,

I was thinking the same thing - I sent a PM a little while ago hoping to hear from him.  I hope that he is okay too.

BTW, how is your ferritin Tariq?

Sharmin,

I'll be checking my ferritin next week, lets hope for the best.
Its been above 3 months now since i intensified my chelation. I am hopeful for a noticeable drop in ferritin InshaAllah.

Tariq,

Please share what you learn when you have your results.  In three months I know that you will have made significant progress.
