Low iron level not good enough for Navy fitness test.
« on: January 03, 2009, 12:08:06 AM »
Hi,

This is my first post and I am very happy to find like minded individuals who seem to be very nice and helpful. I have a son who is 22yrs and has Thal minor like myself and he recently tried to get into the Navy. He passed everything and was accepted , but there was a small hiccup. When they realised he had Thal minor they didn't want to accept him at all, then after convincing them that really it is a disorder not a disease, they relented on that , but his iron level was down to 8.  So they won't allow him to do his fitness test until he gets his iron up. I have put him on liquid iron which I picked up from the health food shop and a multi vitamin. Afte reading some posts I don't know if I am doing the right thing by him. Can someone steer me in the right direction please.

Cheers
Chook

Hi Chook,

Do you know what tests your son had that determined he had low iron? Was a complete iron panel run? Before taking iron supplements, a thal minor should verify that there is iron deficiency, as hemoglobin level or hematocrit alone cannot diagnose iron deficiency.
Andy

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

Hi Umaiir,

Thankyou for your kind words of encouragement. It is people like you on this forum from around the world that make the world a better place. I think that we are lucky to have a name attached to us other than the one we are born with. Everything happens for a reason as they say and in this circumstance I think I am one of the lucky ones to be able to meet good people like yourself.

Take care,
Best regards

Hi Chook,

Welcome on the forum,Although your son's iron seems to be low, but it would be better to do full iron studies before starting iron supplements,do you know what's your son's hb? Plus folic acid is a must for every thal,it strengthens red blood cells.

Feel free to ask whatever questions you have in mind.

Zaini.
