Barack Obama's Inauguration
« on: January 20, 2009, 04:44:00 PM »
I hope that this is the beginning of great things to come.
There is a lot of pressure on one man - but I am hopeful that he will
contribute to a better world to come.

Well, do not fool yourself. The USA policy is the same no matter who the President is.

As regards US foreign policy, for the most part, I have to agree. Hillary was a terrible choice for secretary of state and it means a continuation of militaristic policies by the US. The targets may change but you can expect the US to continue to lead the world in war making.

I guess it is easy to over estimate the power of the US president and to underestimate the power of US policy.

Hilary Clinton is a bad choice because her presence doesn't signify change - it threatens to bring about more of the same.

All we do is hope that Obama proves to be more of a 'global, humanitarian' president.  People have so many hopes riding on him - minorities look to him to bring about equality and opportunity, people look to him to fix the struggling economy and the world in a state of crisis looks to him for peace.  With the Americans knee deep in places like Iraq on a path to war and destruction - I wonder what steps Obama will take to reverse the situation - or will he take comfort in what is known and has already been done before and continue down the easy path.

The light at the end of the tunnel is that Bush has been in office for eight years - it was a relief to see him get on a plane and leave Washington) - and it is nearly impossible to have a worse leader than Bush - so anything will be better than the Bush Era.

Hoping for a better tomorrow,
Sharmin

Maybe it's only a dream but I hope Obama will try to solve problems and won't create more of them. It's not that I think this man is a Hero but it seems to me that he's going to try to do his best, don't you think? I don't know, maybe is that I really couldn't stand Bush and any other person would seem to me better than him.

All I know is that we need to stop lots of wars altogether.

Good topic!

His inaugurations did sound very socialistic (American way) for me, which is indeed a very good thing. I love the speeches of one of the padres. His own speech gave me hope for a more bright future. I must say that he made a good decision by freezing those lawsuits of Guantánamo. Justice returns to the world. I was suprised (and happy) to hear that he already called Abbas. I hope he will sentence Israel. The whole world is able to see how they transform the rural parts of Gaza into a moon scenery. It's a shame for the world.

It made me laugh when Obama correcting the Supreme Court Judge and than he made again a mistake, Obama correct, SCJ says the right words and Obama messed up.  :rotfl

And I love the performances of Shakira. She sang super, especially during her cover of brightside of the road (Von Morrison).  :wub

I think we must answer our post next year to see of he did not give us false up.

I was very pleased to see that Obama reached out to Muslims and spoke about forging new relationships. And I do think the US won't go rushing into wars like we did with Bush, who had a vendetta against Saddam and used his last orders as president to have his proxies use American made weapons dropped from American planes on the people of Gaza. That massacre was done solely to please Bush just as when the US shot down an Iranian civilian airliner in 1988 just to give the senile old fool Reagan a "special" 4th of July. I think the world will at least be safe from these irrational acts by these sick people. However, I do think that Obama will not be able to do much about what is already entrenched in the US military and intelligence agencies, regardless of how good his intentions. My hopes for Obama are more domestic, in that we do expect changes in the priorities of the US at home, and this would be a positive. I wish him the best but realize that there are many people who want to see him fail and will do all they can to make that happen.

Its not as easy as most people think. In my opinion its only going to worsen with time.

I agree, Andy, with your assessment.

The best we can hope from Obama is that:

1. US gets serious about multilateral co-operation again
2. Tries to fix health care in the US
3. Gets Wall Street to pay for all their excesses

But, I am afraid that expectations are sky-high, and people are going to be disappointed - both in the US and outside.

What gives me a good laugh, though, is the irony - the people of America have such high hopes of a politician, who has come out of the political system of .......... Chicago!!! I wonder what Daly thinks?
