haemoglobin 7.7 with 8 months of pregnancy (m waiting for andy's word)

My wife is thalminor.  She had placenta previa in the intial stages of pregnancy, but was o.k. withit after some rest.  She has a weak physical structure.  Her haemoglobin in the beginning was 10 (before pregnancy), which has dropped to 7.7 as on date. i.e. in the 8th month of her pregnancy.  her feritin level is 16.10 ng/ml.  There are no symptoms of weakness,  should she be prescribed blood transfusion or anykind of tablets can help?

incase we go for blood transfusion, can it have any ill-effect on the baby?

I am not the right person who can answer your question, but others can. It will just take some little more time due time difference.
Does your wife takes folic acid btw? That is recommend. (and that's all I know)

ya, she has been prescribed folic, vitamin and iron tablets.  But it seems iron is not absorbed inher body the way it should!! She also takes vitamin c tablets that helps to break the iron, but that also doesnt seem to work!! She also consumes spinach, pomengranate and other juices on daily basis!!

My worry is : can blood transfusion in latter stages of pregnancy create problems for the baby?

Hi,

Blood transfusion will not hurt the baby, infact it will help your wife to be strong and healthy and in result baby will be strong and healthy, follow your doctors and if they say transfusion is necessary, don't worry,it won't hurt your baby.

Good luck :goodluck

Arpan,

You might want to check the thread related to Thal Minor Pregnancies at

Of specific interest to your wife's condition would be the following threads

Please note - these are experiences of some of our members when they have gone through pregnancy with thal (minor). They are just a pointer for you. Please consult your doctor. I have heard/read from a lot of thal(minor) mom's tthat pregnancy has helped them. Think of it - Better Hemoglobin will give your wife better energy and the at the end the child as well as the mom would be beneficial with it.

Where are you located? Please make sure you get in touch with a hematologist and doctor that is knowledgeable about thalassemia.
