Circumcision
« on: August 18, 2017, 08:06:32 AM »
Baby Y is now 20 months old and we are planning on having him circumcised. He is beta thal / hbe intermedia. His hb levels have been averaging around 70hb. He has not had any transfusions in over 1 year.

I spoke with the haematologist regarding his circumcision. This will need to be done under general anaesthetic. We were advised there  could be complications and we shouldnt go through with the procedure due to his levels being so low.

Can anyone advise?

Is it safe for him to go through a circumsicion?
Appreciate any advice /input.

Regards

Why not consider local anesthetic. My son had his circumcision at age 4 weeks (I think the doctor just used numb cream "EMLA"), it worked fine. He is thal minor. Circumcision is a relatively safe procedure. Generally, it should not be delayed beyond 3 months (that's when a child is less likely to move during the procedure).
Regards.

I would concur that a local anesthetic would be preferable. With the Hb so low, I don't like the use of a general anesthetic for an optional procedure.
